Perma Blue Liquid Gun Blue Finishing All-Inclusive Easy-to-Use Kit for Gun Cleaning, Maintenance and Preservation

I found a gun, it is 100 years old, it had been stored in a closet for more than 50 years untouched. It actually had more staining than rust, however once cleaned and left to dry out it began to rust terribly. I opted for this product. 1) I’m not an armorer, but with ease I was able to take the gun completely apart. This began the cleaning phase, my effort was of course to physically clean the gun, 3 days later I opened the cleaner and began the process of removing all the oils from me, easy task, no issues, everything went perfectly. 2) Now we begin removing the original blueing and any rust that was left. Okay I had watched a video, and with all the reviews cleanliness is the most important thing. This product worked amazing with a rag I basically just wiped the gun chrome, of course I used steel wool, with little effort, I could now see the original metal, and was about to work the tough spots and any dings I could find. Two days later, all the way through 1200 grit sandpaper and the green buffing compound and an industrial buffing wheel I could see myself perfectly in all of the metal, funny but everyone who saw it thought it looked beautiful chrome. 3) Reblueing-arrrrrr! Coat and little to nothing, reclean, steel wool, blueing, 6 coats later I’m on the Internet trying to get any advice on why this is not working, along comes Bubba44mag who says that the most important thing about re-blueing is heat. This is not in the instructions and like stain turns out to be important. Bubba said place the metal in the oven heat to 350f and this will be amazing more consistent etc, well I try not to place things in the oven, so I went to the gas log turned it on and hung up all the pieces for 2 days, to get heat through the metal, instantly fixed everything, 1 coat and the barrel looked brand new, not only the color but the blueing this time was perfectly smooth, so I rehung it to dry, cleaned again and ran another coat, beautiful, then rehung everything. 4) My experience with guns has always revolved around working the tool, while a professional gunsmith takes care of the details, obviously we have to be able to communicate. When the guns go to a place where maintenance may suffer there are rules, and the most important rule is cleanliness number 2 is blueing funny but this was part of my job, and these people just taught me why. In the words of a great man, SFC Keyes oil and heat condition the metals not on the outside but through the metal, so I used the oil wipe that came in this kit, along with the fireplace, now imagine the barrel is so shiny black, I wanted to send a picture to a friend, and when I touched the barrel it was dry, so I rewiped it and started pushing the oil into the barrel, I’ve now decided that this step should take a couple of days. Very happy with the results using this to restore and reblue an old 10-22 barrel. The finish came out looking factory new. The process is easy, but involved. It takes a lot of prep work, sanding, and scrubbing off the old finish and any rust. Then spreading on the bluing, quickly rinsing your part off, more scrubbing, rinsing, and reaplying. It took me about 5 coats of the bluing to get a factory-like finish. What really made the difference was very lightly polishing the barrel after each coat with the supplied steel wool. In the end, my barrel shines like a mirror with a great blue finish. I would not hesitate to use this again. I will just have to wait and see how it holds up, and will update as necessary.

The swabs are awful for working on large pieces if you're wanting an even blue finish, so if you are blueing blades, I suggest you have a puffy microfiber towel used for automotive maintenance instead of the little swabs, because this blue chemical acts real fast, meaning you want to apply it all at once which isn't really possible. In general, I thought the instructions complicated some steps while not being descriptive enough on other steps. I ended up watching people use this stuff on YouTube to get a better idea how it works since I never used it before. Despite nearly getting a disastrously uneven finish on my Musashi katana, I think the results are rather beautiful and achieved close enough to my goal of making my sword become blue, as it is blue depending on the light angle and intensity. I don't feel the need to upload a ton of pictures of my sword and bushcraft knives, but I upload one image of my sword to show you, which is after I used metallic markers and sword oil to coat the blade. I know some people find it taboo to treat the handle section but I really don't care about letting my handle rust in order to prove its age, so that too was blued, colored, and very lightly oiled. My knives are made by Marttiini and Morakniv, and Birchwood Casey only works on stainable high carbon steel, but I did try some on my stainless steel knives just to see but nothing happened. The blueing is way better than using vinegar patina because the vinegar patina rubs off with little use, although this blue stain will do the same over use of course as you wear down the steel, but the blue holds on much longer. I didn't try blueing a pre-existing mustard pattern so I can't comment if overlapping will remove underlying designs. The chemicals seemed to work good enough but I wasn't really that impressed with them, especially considering how expensive this stuff is, but it was the only practical option I could find for cold blueing. So take note sword owners, be sure you thoroughly clean your blade with degreasers and distilled water (my shower has a water filter so you don't really need distilled for cleaning, but I used a distilled water bath as a bath stop using the shipping box and a plastic painter's tarp) and get your self a puffy fluffy towel to apply the blue in one big fast sweep across your sword. I had some sections of my sword not blue as fast, with a few stubborn spots, so I had to sweep, sweep, and scrub a few minor points. I ended up being happy with the end result though as my sword has an even enough finish. The angle in my picture shows a blue hamon and blackish side and spine, but light from the other angle makes the hamon look reddish and the blade as blueish. Overall, it's a bit like a combining a brown base with a chromatic spectrum reflection, but it tends to show enough of blues and teals for my liking. It's a nice blue patina that looks very appropriate on a sword.

You're not going to keep this in the original packaging as a kit because you can't set the blister pack on a shelf vertically, and the bottles are for crap, so if you store them anything but upright, they're going to leak all over the place. The stuff worked, but it wouldn't be hard to make the packaging also not suck

Product did a great job! My 1965 rifle looks brand new from 5 feet away. Any closer your can see my mistakes. A few tips I will say: -put all solutions into a small bowl, don't dip applicator into the bottle because it will contaminate the whole bottle. -After decreasing for bluing, a bit of acetone helps a lot to clean and evaporate and water. -For the bluing solution it's easier to use a facial pad or something other than the stick applicator provided. Makes it less likely to streek. -don't try to do large pieces like the barrel in 2 sections at a time; you will never be able to blend it in smooth and will be able to see exactly the 2 sections. Just do the whole barrel at once and tape off the receiver to avoid runs. Amazing product gave new life to my old firearm and it really looks great! Love it
