A political economist points out all the ways in which political gridlock is the byproduct of rational behavior. Unfortunately, many of the solutions he identifies will still result in gridlock if people take their rational behavior to the extreme. The author struggles to realize that good politics often requires people to set aside self-interest and pursue a more enlightened notion of the public good.
