CritterTrail Run-About Habitat for Pet Hamsters, Gerbils, Mice and Other Small Animals

Got the cage before we even got a shipment notice. Amazon reported it expected on or about the 7th and it was sitting outside our door very early yesterday morning (the 5th) so it had to have been delivered the night before (the 4th) and we'd only ordered it the day before! The cage was mostly easy to put together, just a suggestion if you buy this cage, and have cats, tape the lid piece that goes under the ball with some clear packing tape. A simple pop on the edge and the whole lid/ball assembly comes flying off. I used clear packing tape so it wouldn't show, and I tipped the entire cage over testing to make sure it would stay. So yeah, it's secure now. The ball connection to the tube didn't seem very secure, but I sat and spun it as fast as I could for a good ten minutes to make sure it wouldn't wobble free, and it didn't. I don't think I would let a gerbil run around in that ball off the cage though, the closure isn't secure at all, unless I'm missing something. (Which is entirely possible.) Overall love the cage, we're going to attach it to the old cage we already have when extra tunnels arrive, and keep adding on ... for some seriously spoiled rotten gerbils!

I ordered this cage for my daughter's Campbell's Dwarf Hamsters that needed an additional cage for more space. I received this cage with a small crack in the lid. It wasn't a big enough crack to make the cage unusable so we connected it to our other cage and I emailed Super Pet. After I sent them a picture they shipped me a new lid. Within the next week, however, my daughter dropped the ball and broke the piece that held the ball's lid in place when detached from the cage. Then, when we cleaned the cage we found a huge crack in the base. The cage had not been moved so I have no idea how it happened. I emailed Super Pet again and was sent both a new ball and a new base - FREE. We have had no problems with the cage since so I believe the cracks may have all started due to shipping. Super Pet has great customer service and I will definitely order more of their products in the future.

I have two sons (5 and 4) that insisted on getting hamsters. (Zhu-Zhu pets weren't cutting anymore). Never have owned a hamster myself I reviewed everything out there on what I needed to buy. This first dilemma was picking a cage. I read great reviews and then I saw horrible reviews for almost every hamster cage out there. After reading every review on Amazon and then going to other vendors websites to read their reviews, I went with this cage. Since I have two son's, I had to purchase two. Putting these cages together was simple, actually had to put two together. Thinking back I read reviews that people had hard times putting this together, if they did, then they are not good with following directions. This cage is simple to put together. "Yes" this cage is plastic and if you force anything it will break, however just be careful and don't force anything together. The only suggestion that I have is the clip that keeps the hamster ball in place, turn it around, opposite of the instructions. This will keep the ball firmly in place, the other way, I felt wasn't secure and the hamster could escape. (I purchased two separate balls so I didn't need it anyway). I read reviews that the door in the front of the cage easily comes open. On both (2) cages, that door is firmly closed, no chance of the hamster escaping. Maybe the other reviewers of this cage were feeding their hamster's steroids :). Ultimately both cages have 1 Teddy Bear Hamsters in them. They both seem to love this cage. One of them unfortunately has decided to make his bed in the ball, the other uses the lookout section - but both have plenty of room and neither has escaped!

I love these habitats and won't buy any other kind. I've had rats, hamsters, ferrets, guinea pigs and even a rescued chipmunk in the past now we have pet mice. I see a few terrible reviews in here that are OBVIOUS operator errors from not paying attention to pet size or set up instructions. There is no way for the appropriate sized rodent to get trapped in this or to get out. The review saying the ball falls out didn't screw the blue plastic screw in and set the yellow end as the instructions show. The review saying a BABY hamster died from the cage left children and animals unattended AND disassembled an S curve tube WITH the poor thing inside of course it died. People READ THE INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE also buy for the right habitat for the RIGHT rodent. These are easy to set up and totally safe.

This cage does not keep hamsters in!!!! It is very poorly made. We bought two cages for each of our kids to have a hamster—both of the hamsters escaped the first week. They opened the latch and popped up the lid from the inside of the tall lookout tower so we had to rubber and it shut, they figured out how to push the round ball attachment open and escape out that way, then they figured out how to take the whole top half of the lookout bowl/dish off and escape. I don’t think we purchased two genius hamsters—I think these cages are poorly designed. To have to rubber band and cover in duct tape a cage that is supposed to keep your pet safe is ridiculous. The tubes are very loose fitting and easily fall apart. I can’t believe the price paid for such low quality. We just don’t want anyone else to waste their money and have the headache and worry of their hamsters never being safe.

One crittertail habitat, whether the largest size or not, is not even remotely close to what a hamster needs. 2 is the absolute MINIMUM for one hamster, so I recommend getting 3 if you can and want to provide a better living condition for your hamster. The habitat is mostly made of plastic, although there are wire sides. However, the cage doesn't fit most of the requirements a hamster habitat needs: ✖ the plastic base is not tall enough to provide 6 inches of bedding (can provide around 4 in) ✖ the cage is not tall enough for most hanging toys, and the roof is not wired (hard to hang toys) ✖ one cage is WAY too small for a hamster, considering getting at least two and on the quality of the product: ✖ water bottle included is too small and hard to see how much water is left ✖ the plastic quality is very brittle and easily breaks ✖ assembling is difficult as some parts don't fit perfectly; takes some strength to attach and detach Highly, highly recommend into looking at other hamster cages. Kaytee habitats are cheap which makes them popular, but definitely are NOT the best product out there. Please consider researching on this more before bringing a pet home.

This cage was awesome. I got it for my baby chinese dwarf hamster so he couldn't use the wheel right away but as he grew he got it to move. He started to sleep in the lookout tower but then I put an igloo in and he slept in there but he still goes in the lookout tower. The wires were very sturdy and they couldn't escape. I used to have a habitrail cage and it got many holes in it and my hamster escaped 7 times. I eventually had to tape it. But this cage was way better and my hamster seemed to like it better. Also, the ball works great. It has a sliding door and my hamster loves to run in it in the cage and on the ground. Over all, this is a great cage and I would definitely recommend it.

My little guy loves his cage! It’s the perfect size for dwarf hamsters and I haven’t had any problems with him chewing through anything. Add some tubes for a fun little playground! I also love that you can add the little bedding trays to it, clean up is much easier. It was definitely tricky to put together but Kaytee’s customer service is flawless. They will walk you through the entire process. They actually had to assemble, take it apart and reassemble multiple times as part of their training!

It's a good cage for Djungarian hamsters and for mice but it is too small for bigger hamsters. The running wheel is slightly too heavy. The one on the other cage (wheel shape and spinning in circle) is better. The lookout is great. Very nice in connection with other cages and critter trail products. Shamefully: it is impossible to find any critter trail components in most of the retail shops in Austria

Un peu dégoûtée parce que jeune j'avais cette cage pour mon hamster et que je l'aimais tellement que je voulais que mon enfant ai la même pour son petit compagnon mais... Acheté une première fois et retourné car la roue n'était pas utilisable (mauvaise pièce fournie). Deuxième fois, la roue n'est pas utilisable au sol car il manque la porte coulissante et la fermeture plastique de la tour a cassé (plastique très rigide qui fend après quelques ouvertures) et ce n'est pas faute d'avoir fait attention. J'ai donc acheté autre chose et vu que c'est cassé je ne peux pas la retourner. Je vais essayer de bricoler une porte coulissante et voir si les tuyaux sont utilisables avec ma nouvelle cage. C'est dommage. Point possitif : le système d'ouverture de la porte est super bien pensé et facile à ouvrir pour un enfant. Points négatif : trop de démarches à faire pour avoir un produit opérationnel (ou je n'ai pas de chance 😁), fragile, démontage difficile pour le nettoyage à cause des tuyaux.
