Book 2 down ... on to number 3
Ok number 2 down ... on to number 3.What to say about the book that hasn't been said in other reviews ...A good read. A bit clunky in places especially if you don't recognise (American) fashion brands ..... It gets a little far fetched around the action scenes at times but the quality of the writing is such that I stayed involved with the story to the last page

V.I. The Cat
Warshaski has at least 9 lives in this early outing by Paretsky. Thankfully her exploits become less unlikely as the series develops. Still some of the very best detective fiction around, though.

holiday read
Having loaned my copys of this author's works and never getting them back this was great to purchase them secondhand as they are great to re-read. The plots are so fast moving one time is not enough to take in every nuance.

Who Done it?
I'm surprised to find myself enjoying the V.I. Warshawski series. I don't know why I ever thought I wouldn't like it. There are a few things I found a little jarring about book 2. For instance, it is set in the early 80's, so no one has cell phones. A couple of scenes had me wondering why the characters didn't just look things up on the internet. That's not the book's fault. It's a good mystery, though, set in the world of the shipping companies that traverse the great lakes. (Coincidentally, this is the second book in a row that took place at least in part at sea.) V.I.'s cousin Boom Boom, a star hockey player forced into early retirement due to injury, has found a new passion at a job for a shipping company. He leaves a message for V.I. to call him...And then dies what only V.I. believes is a very suspicious death. The investigation leads V.I. into a perilous series of brushes with her own death, including a spectacular auto accident on a busy highway and having a thousand foot ship blow up beneath her while passing through a canal. As is customary with whodunnits, nearly everyone is a suspect. We know V.I. survives because there's a book 3. But to find out whodunit, you'll just have to read it yourself.

gritty Chicago-based private eye mystery
It's been quite a few years since I last read a Sara Paretsky book but this second book in the series is a good reminder of why I like them. Besides being set in my hometown of Chicago, albeit the Chicago of the 1980s, it's a bit grittier than I'm used to. The sleuth, V.I. Warshawski is a lawyer turned private eye who, in this book, is investigating the death of her cousin, Boom Boom, a retired professional hockey player for the Chicago Blackhawks, who fell or was pushed under a ship. Her investigation ends up focusing on Great Lakes shipping, which included a lot of interesting information, along with a few shipping lines and the people who owned and ran these lines. Lots of disasters and catastrophes. Lots of driving around to locales I'm familiar with, in both the city and the suburbs.Overall, I'd say I liked it but didn't love it. The plot was somewhat interesting, as were all the Great Lakes shipping aspects, though a bit slow at times. I had a bit of a tough time keeping the characters straight.I liked this second book in the V.I. Warshawski series enough to read the 3rd book in the series.

A fine detective story about an independent-minded sleuth who seeks justice.
Sara Paretsky, who began her writing career in the early 1980s, continues to impress readers of her particular genre -- Chicago crime solving by an energetic female detective. This book, as are her other books, are easy to read, replete with danger but with V. I Warshawski's commitment to solving a crime that often involves her friends, her neighborhood, or in the case of Deadlock, a close relative. Paretsky is very successful at description -- one can easily relate to her home, her friends and adversaries, and her personal challenges.

V. I. Always Exciting
Ms Paretsky never fails to keep one in suspense. She creates well-developed characters come to life on the page and in our hearts. While V. I. Is never overly emotional she exhibits a depth of personality rarely seen in books about women detectives. The twists and turns in this book will keep one reading until the very end, even fitting it in during brief coffee breaks. It was hard to put down. Well done.

Good read
This book told me rather more than I wanted to know about the workings of the shipping industry on the Great Lakes. But as usual, Vic is wonderfully capable and entertaining in her usual stubborn and iconoclastic way. I found her devotion to her dead cousin to be touching, because she's so alone in the world, except for her doctor friend.

Can't read enough
I am a old Peresky fan, who has rediscovered her. Maybe I read this book years ago, but it did not feel old or tired. It felt fresh and alive and just new. The characters were, as usual, well developed and believable. You felt a part of conversations. You liked the way she handled the "good" and "not so good" characters. Perestky knows how to weave the tale so that it is "just right." Interesting story line, great mystery

I love Sarah Paretsky
I love Sarah Paretsky. This book, along with Critical Mass, are my favorites. What I particularly liked about this book is the great background in shipping, and details about what it is like to take a huge 1000 foot vessel through a major canal off Lake Michigan

Vic Has Got Guts
She is intrepid and astute. I am moving on to number three; Sara did a nice job on Great Lakes shipping and made it an interesting venue.

I like the first one I read
i actually just started reading the v i warshawski books a couple of months ago...I like the first one I read, so, I went back and started with the first one in the series...I am reading them all, in order...I am now on # 6...Iike them all! I have read all the old mike hammer books, and all the old shell scott books...these are a lot like them, except the private eye is a woman...but, she is smart, tough, and, cool..and, believeable!! I would recommend her books to anyone who likes the kind of "old school" hard-boiled private eye books...a lot of action, very little bad language( you really don't need the "f" word in every sentence}..and, a lot of humor, too....the author writes a lot like Kathy Reichs!! and, that ain't bad!!!!

Typical V.I. Warshawski
Page turner, hard to put down, interesting characters. As usual Warshawski gets herself into tricky, dangerous situations but manages to extricate herself.
