Q: How do I use this? Do I need to unravel the chime first?

Yes, unravel it. They pack it so it doesn't rattle and bang on the way to you so if you want to hear it you'll need to de-tangle it. Also suggest hanging it in a shaded area as the sun and weather fades that colorful outside design to an almost dull gray.

Q: What is the total length, from the top of the hanging cord with hardware to the bottom of the windcatcher?

My Zaphir wind chime is 11 1/4 inches from the top of the hanging cord to the bottom of the barrel. Then add an additional 4 3/4" from the bottom of the barrel to the bottom of the wind catcher. So total length for mine 16 inches.

Q: Do the blue, green and red chimes all have the same sound?

No they are all different. Search youtube as I believe that might be where I heard the different zaphir sounds.

Q: are these designed to go outside?

They can go outside but be prepared for the lovely design to fade off. Perhaps on an enclosed porch would be better - weather does a number on the colorful images though it does not seem to affect the sound quality.
