Operation Condor: The History of the Notorious Intelligence Operations Supported by the United States to Combat Communists across South America. After reading this e-book, I remember a scene from the movie Man on Fire (2004). That scene is near the beginning of the movie were John Creasy (Denzel Washington), former CIA operative, visits his old comrade Paul Rayburn (Christopher Walken) and asks him whether God can forgive him or them for what they had done?In theory, Operation Condor was initially a mechanism for sharing and intelligence between the nations of the Southern Cone of South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay). In practice, during Operation Condor intelligence was shared between the various countries including death squads that eliminated many individuals who were perceived to be communist, socialist and their sympathizers or anyone who might speak against the military regimes that overthrew their elected governments. The e-book provides an interesting quote by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger “I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go Communists due to the irresponsibility of its own people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves.”The e-book describes in excruciating detail both the right-wing opponents and socialists opponents of each nation that was involved in Operation Condor. The book describes some of the individuals that were killed by the death squads and or tortured during Operation Condor. Lastly, the book attempts to describe how the people and governments of the affected country are handling their past history. The book is well written and has numerous references.

This book talked about corrupt regimes & the harm they cause to their citizens simply for different ideologies. Some of the torture that the citizens received was unbearable & barbaric. How one citizen can do that to another with no remorse as the key players of these regimes did is beyond me. We as people need to be more compassionate & loving to other people even if we don’t agree with their ideologies. Operation Condor was a very dark period for mankind. I enjoyed reading this book & learning of a history I didn’t know before.
