The Ballad Of Jack And Rose [DVD]

... handled in Miller's capable hands and Day Lewis isn't bad either. Interesting to see Paul Dano here
A tender tale that is maturely handled in Miller's capable hands and Day Lewis isn't bad either. Interesting to see Paul Dano here, knowing what he and Daniel get up to in 'There Will be Blood.'

The Crucible
This must be one of the best and most considered plays ever written. In this film version, we are treated, as ever to an impeccable, surprising and totally moving performance by the wonderful Day-Lewis but, I have to say, even he was overshadowed in this film by the great Paul Scofield, whose perfidious, sanctimonious, duplicitous, character actually made me shout at the screen more than once. If only we could have films of this quality to choose from more often - a totally uplifting experience.

The Ballad of Jack and Rose.
Controverial subject matter once out there is open to viewers interpretation.A very intimate portrayal of the dynamics of isolation and illness.A passionate human story about striving to cling to a belief system amidst inner turmoil.A moody piece very atomospheric, very deep.Excellant performances very real.

Camila Belle sulks around looking menacing
Personally I was disappointed after reading so many great reviews on this film. Yes it does indeed have some very touching moments, and overall, the cast put in some great performances but, the script hardly does them justice and rarely fully engaged me. I don't know if it's meant to be ultra deep in meaning but I found it shallow. It didn't get too deep, it didn't go far enough and in all honesty wasn't that inrteresting. Therefore it gets little more than a lukewarm score for entertainment from me.

Stunning
I have watched this film, because it is a Rebecca Miller film. Her films are so outstanding. As a director and author, the way she handles a theme to express it in a movie is very impressive.

Hauntingly Beautiful But Ultimately Heartbreaking
After watching this movie, I feel like I just got kicked in the gut because it ends so sadly. I won't go into too much detail regarding the premise of the movie, as other reviewers have already done an excellent job in that respect, but the island where Jack and Rose live is almost sort of a latter day Garden of Eden, where father and daughter live a basically carefree existence in their own private paradise surrounded by wildflowers and the ocean. However, this paradise is under threat from both the outside world and also from within the four walls of home. Jack and Rose have been isolated from the prying eyes of the world since Jack took Rose out of school at age 11. Since then Rose has grown into a beautiful and very loving, yet still innocent, young woman. Her natural closeness with her father has recently grown into something more akin to romantic love, however, and both father and daughter are becoming increasingly aware of, and tormented by, their feelings for one another. The thing is, these two people mean almost EVERYTHING to each other due to their self-imposed isolation from the outside world. Add to the mix that Jack is quickly dying from a bad heart, and you are keenly aware of the terror that brings to Rose's psyche of soon being left all alone in the world at the tender age of 16. Once Rose finds out that her dad has a casual girlfriend from off the island, one who comes to live with them in a rather lame attempt by Jack to potentially give Rose a family for when after he's gone, Rose becomes extremely jealous of this "other woman", and quickly endeavors to experience sex as soon as she can with one of her new "step-brothers" so that she can get back at her dad for what she feels is him emotionally and sexually cheating on her with the now live-in girlfriend. Rose basically succeeds in getting rid of these unwanted guests in the end, so that the final 25 minutes or so are basically father and daughter alone again like Rose always wanted. If there is anything so pure and beautiful as the idealized love a teenage girl feels towards those she loves, I have yet to see it. Rose has decided that she wants so much to experience physical love with her father before he dies, and also that when he dies she'll go with him, but Jack decides that he cannot and will not allow himself to travel down the forbidden path with her. Although I feel incest is unhealthy at best, and probably criminal in many cases, it was actually kind of heartbreaking that these two people never got to experience that physical bond with each other because they loved each other so completely. Incest is obviously taboo in most cultures, undoubtedly for the better, but the film made me question whether it is automatically wrong in EVERY case. When Jack finally dies at the end, it is quite moving and incredibly sad to see Rose have to experience this all by herself at such a young age. She does keep the final promise she made to her dad that she would "try" not to kill herself when he died, although she couldn't guarantee it, but we never really find out whether she finds happiness in her life without him or not. This film has effected me deeply, and I'm sure I will be re-watching it many times in the coming years. A very bittersweet experience, but a movie I'm glad the filmmaker made.

nachhaltiger Eindruck
