Works well, provided you place in a high traffic area
This rat killer is a great product, more reliable than cage traps, as you can disguise it a bit. It also keeps a count of the kills for you which is a helpful feature. If you are using in an enclosed area such as an attic/loft ensure you check for a body regularly! If using outdoors, animals will often come and dispose of the body for you. When I ordered this it came quickly, and was packaged well. This is still working well a few years on, and the gas canisters last a long time. Good value for money.

crap
Possibly the most useless item i have ever spent this ridiculous amount of money on! I have it a year now and the grand total or rodents killed..... one mouse, yet the rats seem to do a conga past it! Not sure what the so called "coconut scented" bait is supposed to attract, but its not rats here in Ireland. I have replaced the bait with peanut butter and more recently with bacon. The rats now have established a whole chorus line now and quite possibly heating to broadway with their show.....but they are singularly refusing to go near it! UPDATE: First rat killed today 19/12/20 and i put it down to just recently replacing bait with....wait for it....custard from a carton! I accidently found out that this is like catnip for ye olde rodents. Its worth a try folks, will update with progress

Not my cup of tea
Not as good as it’s publicity makes it out to be, I have two and have caught nothing so far. Conventional traps have caught 11 rats so far. I have followed the instructions and have done everything to encourage rats to use them but zilch. Very expensive to be sitting there not catching rats.

It works!
I have a problem with rats, they have been in the house, but I believe I have managed to exclude them - for now. Determined little blighters, aren't they? I have snap traps as I am not a fan of poison except as a last resort, and you have to call in a licensed pest control person to get the good stuff anyway. The snap traps do catch mice and rats, but there I think some individuals learn about traps and don't get caught, so I have been looking for a different kind of trap. Enter this one. It took some thinking about, because of the price, but eventually, I took the plunge and invested in it. I have a wildlife trail camera, so identifying the areas visited by the rats was relatively easy. This turned out to be more or less the whole garden, but the compost bins and raised decking attached to the wall of the house seemed to be their favourite spots The camera has the benefit of checking if there are any animals you do not want to trap around. I like hedgehogs, they are my friends as they eat slugs, who are not my friends. I want to keep rats out of the house, so I placed the trap under the decking on a wooden bracket I made up so I can move it around if necessary. Days went by, and I could see the rat getting closer and closer. Until last night. Clean, instant solution to that particular problem. Money well spent as it is cheaper than paying for rodent control, and no poison involved.

Expensive ornament
Looks nice and impressed the neighbour, but the rat was not interested at all. My garden backs onto a field and I had a rat that used my garden as a public footpath. I would sit a the fence to check the coast was clear, so that's where I placed the trap. Same time each day I watched it for over week expecting to see it get whacked. Nothing doing. In the end I just shot the rat. After 4 months the counter hasn't recorded any kills but I haven't seen anymore activity. Two stars because it looks cool 😎

Hedgehogs can be protected
For squirrels. If the unit is mounted on a flat smooth board the squirrels will find a way to get to it. Hedgehogs cannot mountaineer. Rats can also scale heights.

counter went over 99 dead on one trap, and already 15 after reset
September 2023 Last year, maybe couple of mice, really no rat activity. This year after heavy winter rain in CA and being preoccupied with other stuff I ignored checking on these traps for several months, big mistake! So some of the traps were out of air, peanut butter gone, large spider webs inside the trap, not good. Then we found a rat sitting inside daughter’s car engine posing for Dumb House Owner Magazine and it was a nightmare to get it to leave. Very possible because of the new car smell that even rats appreciate. Tried everything from bright lights, drier sheets, peppermint oil, moth balls, the only thing we didn’t do is put a barn cat on rat duty. Got some scented rat repellent bags on Amazon and placed inside the engine, but ratty chewed on them. Gently spraying water in the engine compartment, removing the ample rat poop pellets with Clorox wipes and spraying several oils where safe around the engine got the rat smell scent out. We also left the car hood up at night and placed snap traps on top of engine (husband’s idea). Soon after, car ratty (I think) went for the A1trap, to its demise. Got clover oil essence, balsam fir oil, peppermint oil and made my own spray. (careful not to spray on car plastic as it can ruin stuff like your headlights, but ok on the tires) Also bought Fresh Cab Botanical Rodent Repellent bags on Amazon, based on You Tube test review. placed around the engine. This stuff makes the car smell divine, if you like Christmas tree smell. So, my A1 traps still work after 3-4 years, counters still function though chewed a bit. I’m still using oily peanut butter mixed with flour to a toothpaste consistency and like to hide the trap near a wall, no plants touching it because of snails crawling on, and hidden as much as possible from birds like Blue Jays. For peanut butter loving snails I use tree copper slug tape on my A1 post. Occasionally, I lightly spray a non scented insecticide on the trap for ants. Killing these really cute field mice and rats is not fun but it is an absolutely necessary inconvenience for us. Friend just had 6k of wires chewed on his new BMW rental and then on his car. He was out of pocket 2K for the insurance deductible and just got the electric Rat Mat for his car.$$$$ Glad to report my adorable wild gray foxes catch a few of these guys, and probably feast on the trapped ones too. March 2021, I am checking traps every 4-5 days now and had no kills in several weeks. Got a few small birds only, not sure why birds like peanut butter vs bird seed nearby. My peanut butter mix with few tablespoons of flour per jar is the preferred rat and mice bait for these traps. I had installed a brand new A24 trap 5 months ago and tried the new bait that is self dispensing and did not get one kill. I wasn’t going to spend the extra money for this bait but I got it for free and gave it a try. Also, the new plastic A24 trap any location folding holder is nice but I really think there is a design flaw as rodents never seemed to go for that trap vs others made with a wood post nearby These traps are the best, but it takes time to learn how to use them. Once again I have 6 acres and using 7 traps within 20-150 feet away from perimeter of the house. Have not seen any rat droppings or activity in about 2 months but breeding season starts soon, so that will change. Wish they had a similar trap for gophers. I truly believe in the amazing efficiency of these traps, but for the A24 company it is hard to compete with easily dispensed rodent poison bait systems. July, 2020 In my opinion, our exterior rodent population has gone up at least 50% since COVID started, so honestly one trap is not going to get you covered if you have 6 acres and are surrounded by wilderness. Every neighbor around me has recently told me about their rat problem getting out of control this past few months. These traps are great over conventional snap traps that you can get multiple kills in one night and don’t have to keep cleaning the traps. Just like everything, experience and communication with the trap supplier are important. We move these traps mounted on a post (customer design ideas online) to where we see rat droppings and found that adding a little peanut butter on the post drives most kills. Each cartridge has 24 fires, that are not cheap plus that we found that a total of about 6 traps work best for a large property. I think ideally 10 traps would really get us covered, but I haven’t won the lottery yet! We may have attracted a barn owl, which is a blessing, and considering getting couple of barn cats. We originally got started and serviced with these traps by a pest company in Carpinteria, CA 2 years ago that uses solely these traps and no poison. He installed something like 8 traps and serviced them twice a month and then monthly and also used his special “secret”rat lure. The guy is a pro at rats and gophers and a total genius on the subject. I quickly learned from him that the trap out of the box is meaningless if permanently mounted somewhere where rodents never visit, so I understand the other bad reviews. Droppings are your red flag. The trap design has been changed recently that it has a holder and therefore mobile, but I cannot comment on the new stand, as I don’t have it. Also, my original trap Amazon purchase was $199 for the trap, counter and 2 cartridges and started at $150 without counter, so not sure why the substantial price increase. Learned that dense peanut butter, not too oily, works great for us, never used their lure and most kills we had were 7 mice and 3 rats in one trap in a night. You must some insecticide around the trap as ants will eat your lure, something not perfume like RAID . I still feel bad killing the mice, but relieved with every rat kill. Expensive traps, but prior to these we had to get rid of a truck because of the damage caused by a never ending rat nests in the engine. I think these traps are very well built, most definitely not habit forming like poison, but you must do your research to get the best results. Or best to hire someone who uses these traps, as you’ll get piece of mind over using poison, or cleaning snap traps.
