it is pretty loud, louder than the speakers on a regular laptop. but if you use it in the maximum volume the sound quality drops a little out of distortion. even so mine has proven to be very good and i use it very often.

Just tried it on my mobile phone and, yes, it works well. However, not many landline phones have an extra audio/headphone socket. Hope that helps.
