It rhymes, and just has a very nice sound if read correctly. My husband is great with cadence and sounds like he is rapping it to my son. Very engaging and the illustrations are nice to look at. Even though it contains monsters, they are actually funny instead of scary. I like how it teaches subtraction by one and also how it teaches sportsmanship. It states at the end "If you lost this time, that's okay. You can win this game another day." I think that is a great loving message. I like that it addresses that winning and losing are okay, and that it focuses on fun and the possibility to do better. The author has a great collection of math series and this one is only level one out of the three. I am now a fan of this series and plan on buying them to foster mathematics for my little one. I got this book to add to my math library, and already I can see some math interactive action happening as we read this at the beginning of first grade next year. Thanks for making education fun!
