Great Gate!
Exactly what we needed for our doorway to the basement. Easy to install and easy to operate, and so far has stayed in the doorframe very snugly despite a 6 and 9 yo slamming it open and closed. We did use a baby fridge safety latch to close the cat door to just small enough to keep our mini dachshund out but let our cats through to their litterboxes in the basement (the reason we got the gate to begin with). If you need to let cats through but keep small dogs out, you will probably need to rig the cat door to only open wide enough for a cat, but it is possible to do that if you're inclined. I like this the best of all the gates we have! Update to answer (hopefully) some recent questions: I have this gate and it is used for both our mini dachshund and our youngest child. The sticker on my gate (purchased in the last 6 months) actually says it is a pet gate, but that WHEN used for children, the pet door should be closed and latched. Obviously this renders the gate less useful for those with crawling children or even small toddlers if the pet door use is the intended goal! That being said, I would guess that the maker is interested in limiting their liability should someone let a crawling/toddling infant get lodged in the pet door while unattended. In my opinion, the risk of that if you're watching your crawling child is probably minimal (just my opinion of course-not a recommendation for anyone to use the pet door with tiny kids around). My kids are just out of their preschool years, but I think I would have used the gate anyway and been very alert to their proximity to the gate had I needed to do so when they were younger (we actually installed a regular cat door in our old house's basement door for the cats to get to their litter box, but to keep our first born out of that stairwell and the basement. She never once tried to go through the cat door, though it was the same size as the pet door on the Carlson gate.) Another precaution with children involves not installing at the top of stairs (I think most pressure mounted gates are not 100% with toddlers when mounted at the top of a stairwell/staircase). Ours is installed at the top of the basement stairs with plenty of floor space between the gate and the first step, but I would not have risked that with a very young child. On the subject of the pet door dimensions (7" wide x 10.5" tall available space), we have a 9 lb. mini dachshund who is smaller than our 4 cats so we have to rig the pet door to only open wide enough for a normal size cat to squeeze-and I do mean squeeze- through. We actually use a zip-tie type child safety lock to restrict how wide the cat door can open, it takes care of keeping our 9 lb. dog from getting to the litter box. So, long and short is I do not think that the gate was intended ONLY to be a pet gate, but the use of the pet door is advised to be restricted with small kids (again probably due to the liability if the company doesn't advise that). And as far as any difficulty opening the gate, I have found that when the gate is not mounted square in the door frame (it shifts after lots of openings/closing...stays firm but just not square), the gate latch becomes "off" and can be harder to open and close. Remounting/fixing the gate at the sides fixed the problem for us. Also, if anyone needs to know this-the pet door opens in both directions (though if you rig the pet door it stays open one way!). Okay, hopefully that answers questions people may have about the gate. :) Update 2-15-19: We have a regular span and extended span gate now and both are working well for our cats and youngest child. The extended span gate does slip over time so it needs to be re-aligned in the doorway at times but both gates have performed now for years and keep our younger kids out and our cats can get through easily. We do use baby rings to keep the pet doors open bc otherwise our younger kids would close the pet doors.

Fabulous!
I really, really like this gate. Fits a standard door, comes with an adapter for any wider door. Was very easy to install, you just twist the knobs until they will almost fit your door, get it in place, and then tighten as needed. Easy peasy. There is a room we consider to be our cat's room. That's where we feed them, that's where their cat tower is, there is a litter box back there, etc etc. This gate was PERFECT to allow the cats to have passage but keep out their slightly larger doggie brothers. It is also the room where all my board games are and I do a lot of crafting. So sometimes I don't want the cats in there either. I can simply shut their little door and then no one gets in. It's so perfect for our uses. I want one on every door in my house to be able to more easily control the flow of animals. It's very stable too. After installing of course the dogs wanted to check it out, and even after trying to crawl through and getting stuck it didn't budge. It came with the option to fully screw it into the wall for extra stability, but I didn't need that for my purposes. It hasn't moved a centimeter since install.

Fabulous gate for dogs, cats and pot belly pigs
I bought this gate over 4 years ago when my youngest dog was an untrustworthy pup. The doorway to my tiled den is extra wide so I needed a gate that could accommodate that width. I also needed a gate that was walk-thru because there are some physically challenged people in my home who would have a hard time stepping over conventional gates. This gate installs easily and securely, adjusting for a perfect fit in my doorway. It comes with two extension panels and you can purchase additional ones if your doorway is wider than 44". It's tall enough that my little dachshund mix (who can sometimes fly when properly motivated) cannot jump over it, but adult humans can easily operate the latch that opens the walk-thru gate. The kitty door at the bottom of the gate had to stay closed at my house because it was perfectly sized for a wiener dog, but my cats were not interested in going into the den with the horrible little dog creature anyway so it wasn't a problem for me. Fast forward to last month. My little dog has become sufficiently trustworthy that the gate has been stored in the basement for a couple of years. However, my eldest daughter has added an indoor miniature pot belly pig to her household of 4 cats. Mookie the pig is now 7 months old and about 45 pounds. He is also an adolescent and a little more stubborn than he used to be. Last month, he decided that rooting around in the cat litter box was loads of fun and seemed to plan his day around this delightful activity. My daughter and her cats were less than thrilled since the pig was vigorously flinging litter everywhere! I remembered the gate in my basement and took it to my daughter's home. She really needs the kitty door because one of her cats is elderly and has only 3 legs so she cannot jump over a gate anymore. After installing the gate in the doorway to the laundry room where the litter box is, Mookie promptly showed us that if he maneuvered just right, he could get thru the cat door in the gate. Luckily, I saw the customer images which demonstrated using cable ties to keep the cat door from opening completely and it worked perfectly. Fortunately, Mookie has grown enough that he cannot get thru the cat door anymore no matter how hard he tries so we've dispensed with the cable ties. The gate works perfectly and my daughter no longer comes home to dirty cat litter strewn around her laundry room floor. The gate is made of powder coated steel and the white paint is extremely sturdy. My household has multiple cats and dogs and children and it still looks brand new after 4 years. The style is fairly innocuous and seems to look as good in my daughter's modern home as it did in my 100 year old house. (Let's face it - a pet gate is not an accent piece so innocuous is about as good as it gets.) If you are looking for a pet gate that will fit extra wide doorways and can be easily walked through by humans, I think this gate may be just what you're looking for.

Versatile, perfect for my needs
Once I got this gate set up, it was great. The small pet door is perfect for my cats and too small for my dog. I got this to keep my dog out of the room where the cat food and litter box are kept. Unlike other pet gates I have used before, I don’t have to completely remove this one to let humans pass through (although a large person might find the human walkthrough a little narrow), and the cats can walk through their little 8X8” door instead of having to jump over the gate. The little door is the perfect size for my cats, but a smallish dog would easily be able to squeeze through it. I think you could jury-rig it to make the cat’s walkthrough a little smaller if necessary. I installed this gate at the top of a short stairwell, and the only real concern is that the bottom piece of the gate frame can be a tripping hazard. I’m very cautious and hold onto the stair railing when going through the gate down the stairs. Once you understand how to use it, the human walkthrough gate is easily operated. It’s a nice safe mechanism to prevent children from using it, because you have to push a button down and then slide it back to open the gate. The human gate snaps back into closed position easily, and there’s a manually operated anchor at the bottom of if you need it. (The gate is pretty sturdy without it, and I don’t usually bother with it.) Assembly is a little complicated and not entirely intuitive – you really do have to follow the instructions, but they are sufficient to get the gate set up. There is one point where I was sure the directions had to be wrong (or the part was defective), but everything was spot on. The top parts of the full gate do not fit together correctly without the gate being installed. The pressure mounts on the top need to be expanded to push the internal pieces of the gate together. I don’t know if this is intentional, but I doubt it. Little plastic discs (called wall cups) are provided to help with permanent positioning, but you don’t have to use them. If you won’t be using the gate in multiple locations, you can screw the caps into the wall to hold the rubber ends of the gate mounts. Because each of the mounts adjusts individually, you can easily install this gate in a hallway with baseboards. The four-inch extender is extremely easy to insert or remove. I can insert it in order to use the gate in my 36” hallway, and I can remove it to install the gate in the narrower doorway in my kitchen (which is where it is permanently placed now). While it is pressure-mounted and therefore does not have to be screwed into the wall, to move the whole gate, you have to adjust all 4 of the pressure mounts. This takes a certain amount of effort, so I don’t recommend buying this if you need something you can plan to use in multiple locations. I ended up deciding to leave the gate in one place. I am only uninstalling it when I clean house. And one major consideration – the four pressure mounts don’t actually screw into the gate, so they can fall out and disappear.

Love this gate
With dogs and cats, we have to make sure we keep the pups away from the kitty box cruchies. We've been using everything from the expandable baby gates with the push down latch system to three panel fireplace screens. The problem is that they have to be completely removed from the doorway in order to access the rooms that hold the boxes. Finding a gate that securely and easily installs into a door frame, comes with a latched walk-through strong enough to keep out a couple of 80 pound dogs, has a cat door small enough to keep the dogs from poking their big melons through, and doesn't cost several hundred dollars has been a challenge. This gate ticks all the boxes and is less than forty bucks. Bingo!! Set up is easy enough for one person to do, though make sure to read the instructions. I missed the part that said the gate looks like it's missing a piece but really isn't, so after putting it together I was a little miffed that the gate appeared defective. It's not defective. Once you adjust the little feet to securely hold the gate in the doorway, the extra gap closes and the gate works perfectly. If you have a home built with doorways that are sized for handicap accessibility, the extra piece included with this door should be enough to make up the difference so the gate will fit. The latch is easy to operate, even for older family members, and is also almost completely silent. There are two little swing latches on either side of the bottom of the walk-through door that help keep it closed. When these are down, the door can't be pushed open by your dog pressing against the bottom of the door and popping the push button latch out of its socket. The cat door is one of the smaller I came across in searching for a decent gate option, and it's thankfully small enough that our bulldog can't get his big gob through and end up stuck. Our cats had no problem adjusting to using the new access to their litter boxes, and we no longer have pups getting into the boxes or gates crashing over in the middle of the night and scaring the poo out of a sleeping household. The gates don't look bad when installed - definitely nicer than the cheap balsa wood and plastic mesh baby gates or the bulky plastic gates secured with the push down tension bar. We wish they made this gate in a size to fit the entire doorframe so we could keep open the laundry room door but keep the cats out so they don't get into the floor joists in-between the ceiling of the finished basement and the floor up the 'regular' part of the house.

Installation was a breeze!
I designated my son's "game room" as the new "Doggy bedroom/Game room", they usually get to come and go as they please, but sometimes, like when I am mopping, have a get-together, etc., I would like to contain them to their new "bedroom". The only issue is it gets incredibly hot in this room if you keep the door closed, especially if the ancient TV we have in there is on, so I started using one of those dog playpens to block the opening. It was a huge pain in the rear to get in and out so I thought I would order a proper gate for it. I looked at tons of gates and reviews but this one seemed to be the best value. It looks good, the price was right, and it seemed easy to install without drilling holes or Not going to lie, I always read the negative reviews on products and I was a little nervous based off of those to order this gate. However, even as bad as I am at installing things, I had this gate installed in less than 10 minutes. I am not really sure what happened for all of those folks that left negative reviews, but I had no issues whatsoever! Yes, at first it does NOT look like things are going to come together or work properly, but once everything is tightened it is perfect! It was a breeze to install and within minutes I had a much more aesthetically pleasing gate than that old playpen. I wound up using the playpen to block off the TV stand and the electronics. Two of my dogs are elderly and have no interest in such things, however, I also have an 8 month old puppy that still occasionally chews on things he should not. So it was nice to have the playpen freed up for other uses. Since I live in a double wide, our door frames are set up a bit differently than a normal homes, so consequently with this gate installed, I cannot shut the door to the room, but that is totally fine with me because the gate is the only door I need. So if you also live in a mobile home, keep that in mind. I was upset at first because I did not think my doorway was wide enough but it wound up being absolutely perfect and the door jambs add an extra layer of security in keeping the dogs from pushing the gate forwards and out of the doorway. I really don't think it would be going anywhere without that additional layer, but it's certainly not now. I really like that it's easy to close as well, if you close it hard enough it latches on its own. The latch portion is all plastic, as well as the stops on the bottom that keep the bottom of the door lined up with the sides, but unless you have a very unruly pup I don't think you will have an issue with those parts. It's also easy to open one handed. Overall I think this gate is definitely worthy of a 5 star review, if anything changes as time goes on I will definitely do an update! Overall I think this gate definitely deserves 5 stars all the way around.

Ideal for dogs, cats, and bunnies
I’m buying a second gate. The first gate I bought was to keep my dog out of the rabbit room but still allow my cats and bunnies into the room to relax and use their litter box without a curious dog in their face. I like this gate so much, I’m buying one so I can keep my dog in my bedroom while my roommate is gaming so my dog doesn’t demand attention. It’s a very stable gate, and I use it without screwing the bits into the wall. It’s not to heavy, but sturdy enough for a 90lbs tall rough collie. The pet door however is not big enough for a Flemish giant or giant angora but ideal for small to medium bunny breeds. The little door took some encouragement by the cats, but after a few goes, the bunnies felt comfortable with the new gate. I only had one accident, where a very big bunny got stuck like Winnie the Pooh in the honey tree, but it was easily fixed, and the gate didn’t tip over and no trauma was inflicted. I find the gate is easy to use with my arthritis, and the door opens and closes without issue.

Small/medium dogs can fit thru cat door
The gate itself is great. It's sturdy, not too heavy. It adjusts well. But I'm a bit irritated about one thing. The cat door is too big. My Shiba Inu's can fit through it. You'd think they wouldn't fit by looking at it. But both had squeezed through the door. Now I can't leave it open for my cats! 😔

Perfect gate
I purchased 2 of these gates for my bloodhound. They are tall, which is great, and the door is large enough for me to pass through without any difficulty. They are sturdy, however, bloodhounds are a bit sneaky when left alone and she was able to push the gate down one time. She hasn't done it since as she is becoming accustomed to the gates. If you have a strong dog, I would recommend securing the gates to the door frame (hence the 4 stars on sturdiness) and it would work fine. Definitely recommend these gates.

Working Well
We like that the gate swings in both directions. The cats loved the cat door put the dog figured out how to squeeze through. Didn't look like she should fit, so be careful with that.
