The astronauts of Apollo 11 made history as the first men to land on the Moon. Learn more about how Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins trained and achieved this momentous feat in this Step 5 History Reader. Step 5 Readers tell stories in chapters using longer paragraphs, for children who want to take the plunge into chapter books but still like colorful illustrations and photography. "The story of Apollo 11 's historic flight, from lift-off, through 'The Eagle has landed,' to splashdown and quarantine. Donnelly does a good job of setting the stage with chapters on the history of the idea of flight to the moon, astronaut selection and training, and look at the flight's effect on people in general." -- School Library Journal. Review: Excellent next-step book for kids. - My son loves this book. The writing style, terminology, and illustrations have aged pretty well. We're going through it for the 5th time in 3 months by his request. The raptor pack and Everest ones are solid as well. Cycle-breaking Dads out there: this is probably what you're after. Review: These Step into Reading series of non-fiction readers are excellent introductions to the genre - I purchased these books (most of the titles in the Step 4 and 5 series) several months ago, but have been giving them out one at a time to my daughter, who is currently in first grade. She loves to read fiction, and has devoured many of the chapter books I've purchased for her or checked out of the library. I was looking for an interesting series of non-fiction books for her, and these seemed like the perfect introduction to the genre. There are lots of illustrations and archival photographs covering the moon launch in 1969. The appeal of this reader lies mainly in the way the information is condensed to suit the needs of young readers - informative, yet not overly descriptive nor steeped in jargon. Also, the illustrations on each page motivate young readers, especially visual learners like my daughter. The Step 5 readers are described as "ready for chapters, grades 2-4", though children who are younger and are at an advanced reading level will find these books interesting and suitably challenging as well.

Engaging!!
This is a excellent book! My 10 year old loves to read biographies so I buy him new ones all the time with stories about real life people he can look up to. This book is very engaging and he loved reading it. He loved it so much that he would ask to turn the light on in the car at night so that he could read it to me. There is lots of interesting information and things to keep him engaged and I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to have their child read more.

A well written history of the space program, great for ages 7-9.
This is a really well written history of the space program in the 1960s, ending with the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. It's a somewhat complicated topic, so even though my five year old has the skills to read the words, this book was a little too heavy to keep her attention for the whole thing. I think it's more appropriate for say 7-9 year olds. That being said, I really enjoyed reading it with her and explaining things along the way. I even picked up some new information myself!

Lot of information
Moonwalk: The First Trip to the Moon (Step-Into-Reading, Step 5) This is probably a good book for an older child. I am reading to a 4 year old. He needs smaller bites of information which is more directly to the point. This is kind of wordy for us and goes off subject to Jules Verne's book and early crack pot ideas on how to get to the moon. Maybe an older kid would be interested in that anecdotal information. But it doesn't work for us. We read tons of Easy readers. Most of them are very good. Some of the level 4 books are like this one. Lots of good information but too much extra. I wish they would make books on the same subject matter but more at level 2 or 3. Unfortunately all the good informational books are level 4. There is a big leap between level 3 and level 4 books. The difference seems like there should be another level in between these two. We will save this one until he gets older and can appreciate the extra info in it. The first and last chapters are on subject so we read these for now. All that said we still love all these books. I appreciate the levels for learning to read.

Engaging narrative that will stir your emotions in a wonderful way
Excellent book that is well written and very engaging! The narrative is fast-paced and exciting, and it points out things I'd never considered about the space race. My 5-year-old loves this. I was glad the book didn't go into detail on the tragedy of Apollo 1 or I would have been answering a lot of questions from my son. This author did a fantastic job highlighting the dangers of space travel and capturing the awe-inspiring spirit of everyone watching these men land on the moon. I think I love this book even more than my kid does!

Perfect reference for a 4th grade presentation
Perfect reference for a 4th grade presentation on Neil Armstrong. It covered many important topics from his entire life including personal and work. It was a huge benefactor to the success of our daughters presentation.

Great book for third graders
I purchased this book for students to read and build background knowledge of the Apollo 11 mission. The students enjoyed the book and was an easy read.

All the kids loved the book
I am a curriculum writer and I had included this book in Grade 3 reading list this year. All the kids loved the book, they were hyper-excited, had tonnes of questions about the Apollo 11 mission and they actually took to Google to find out more about the NASA's moon missions. It is a very well written book.
