The bottom shelf can enhance the stability of the table and is not recommended to be removed.

how far is the bottom shelf to the top? is it big enough to fit my 17"L x 8"Wx 18"H pc case?

Would this hold a microwave ?

Probably, it is pretty sturdy. I have a HP tower computer on mine. Do keep in mind top is 11 X15 inches. If it was used near or close to a wall it would be more stable for microwave opening and closing the door.
