Lots of extra room, sturdy
I bought this Item to take on a 2400 mile round trip to Yellowstone. Since I have never had a roof mounted Cargo Box before, I decided to take it on a 250 mile round trip to the coast to ensure I was comfortable that it would hold up. During the coastal trip I put this through all that paces I could think of and never had any issues. 1. Speed, drove at speeds exceeding 80 mph 2. Corners, went around a lot of sharp corners some as tight as a suggested speed 25 mph 3. Off Road, drove down to the edge of the river over potholes and rocks 4 Wind, coastal winds of 20 to 28 mph The Cargo box never slipped or moved at all, handled everything perfectly Update: I have taken this on more trips than I can count. Highly recommended I have around 8,000 miles logged with this on my roof rack and never had an issue. Anyone saying this had an issue with the top piece coming off didn’t put the front clasp in place or didn’t actually lock it. At 1/2 the price of the more well known brands it delivers. Takes me less than 10 minutes to get in place and I measure it when placing so it is completely centered. Since it is taller than most will fit on a shorter vehicle. Happy Travels to all and hope this review helps someone that was a newbie like me.

Perfect in every way! This is the one you want!
I drove a GMC Yukon XL for 16 years, finally downsized to a GMC Acadia. The only doubt I had was camping; we packed the Yukon to the gills, how would we fit the gear into the Acadia? According to the stats, the Acadia has 18 cu. ft. less cargo space than the Yukon - so the Jeggs was the perfect solution! I bought the crossbars for the Acadia from the dealer, not bad, about $150 for the pair. They are adjustable, but I set them bigger than the instructions said, I drilled holes in the outer dents (You'll see what I mean), which I think gave me 32" between the bar centers. I was a bit concerned about how I'd get it on the roof, especially since I'm 68. But it really was a snap to slide the bottom half up onto the rails from one side of the car. I was a bit concerned about scratching the paint, so I put a blanket around the roof rails, but it turned out not to be an issue. I stood on the back door frames to install and tighten the C-clamps that hold the box to the rails, but I'm tall. Someone shorter may need a small step stool. Having succeeded there, I slid the top onto the bottom the same way. I had the locks open (bars sticking down), then one side at a time I lifted the top to pull the bars into the slots on the bottom. Then I closed the locks on the drivers side. I'll admit the locks are a little fussy, but if you take your time and jiggle the key gently, it will go in and turn the bars. With the bars locked on the driver's side, I lifted up the lid on the passenger side, and used the front and back struts to hold it open. Cool! We went on a camping trip, and I fit 4 sleeping bags, two umbrella chairs, some blankets, a rug for inside the tent in the box, closed the lid and locked the other two latches. I put the key on the key ring with my car keys so I wouldn't go crazy looking for it. I could have stuffed more in the box, but was cautious on the maiden voyage. The latch on the front is easy to forget to latch, but you will hear it tapping the box and figure out what the noise is. It really is amazing, but your just can't tell it's up there! The car drove as normal as can be. They give you a little sticker for your windshield that has a picture of a car with a box hitting a tree, with a caption "Look Up!" Have to admit, I thought of going to the car wash, and then remembered that sticker! Being lazy about unloading after a trip, I left the box with all the stuff on the roof for about a week, and really didn't notice it. When I finally unloaded it, I reversed the process I used to put the two halves on the car, no problem at all. I set the lid on a table in the garage, then nested the bottom inside the lid, and left the hardware in the bottom half. I threw all the sleeping bags and blankets on top, no wasted garage space! One thing I suggest for Jeggs, is they might make their listings for this side-open box and the rear-open box more obvious, maybe have the rear-open box listing say in big letters "side open box also available", and vice-versa. I almost bought the rear open box, then realized I couldn't load it from the rear! Luckily I looked further down my original search list and found this side open box, which was actually a few bucks cheaper. I saw there were some negative reviews, but I would ignore them if I were you, especially knowing what I know now. You can spend more on boxes from other manufacturers, but you won't find one that is better. Easy to mount and remove, very sturdy and very roomy. Also a good price! You can't ask for anything more.

High capacity and good value
I waited to review this, because it took me awhile to get it on the car and test it out. This week I embark on at 2000 mile road trip, the real reason I bought the carrier, so I’ll report back after that trip with any updates. My experience so far: my car didn’t come equipped with crossbars on which to mount the carrier, so I had to order those first and figure out how to mount them. Once I got those installed, installing the carrier was simple. I had to drill new mounting holes as my crossbars were not the default distance apart. That was a simple process, and the carrier has regularly spaced markings for drilling other holes. I was able to lift the carrier onto the roof of the car by myself (with a ladder). It’s unwieldy, but not heavy. The mounting hardware works well. I was immediately impressed by how capacious the carrier is. I loaded it with some test cargo in order to see how stable and quiet the carrier was on my roof. I was impressed. Again, I haven’t taken it for many hours at highway speeds yet, but in neighborhood traffic, and for short bursts of highway traffic, the carrier is stable and quiet. so far, I am pleased with this purchase. UPDATE: We just completed the cross-country trip, and this carrier performed admirably. There was some noise from wind, but nothing that really caused a problem. Clamped down tight before departure, none of the components that hold the carrier to the crossbars vibrated loose. The front clamp held fast. No adjustments were necessary at any point on the trip. Great performance and value!

Great low cost option with lots of space!
I purchased this economical car carrier to add space for our annual beach trip. I have now returned from that trip which included the PA Turnpike, I95, Atlantic City Expressway, and the Jersey Parkway. The carrier was a real trooper carrying our 4 beach chairs, 4 beach umbrellas, a bag of beach umbrella anchors, and two teenage - larger foam - boogie boards. Next year we will include our beach towels. The only thing I added (I felt the front bracket closure was a bit frail…) was a strap around the middle made of two luggage straps hooked together to prevent any possible openings. We did have difficulty with the side locks turning as mentioned in other reviews. That said, perhaps if beach sand or corrosion from rain or salty air gets in them, I can understand the possibility. Should that occur, we will just add another set of luggage straps around the middle and also lengthwise, and I anticipate with those surrounding the “box”, we won’t experience any challenges. Just be sure to secure any ends of the straps so they don’t slap on the top of the car! Year two with the carrier to get our gear to the beach…. Some thoughts to share: the directions are in “a tiny” font that makes them very difficult to read. JEGS could easily improve this!. When using the lift supports for side entrance, the opposite side has a tendency to bend the plastic where the locks are. These should be reinforced or the supports made easier to attach. This summer we eliminated the straps and fortunately we didn’t seem to need them. Another thing we did was place an old quilt in the bottom of the box and that eliminated all of the knocking sounds from the beach chairs that are under the umbrellas. The side locks were a challenge again this year, but after much frustration, we were able to get them locked. Overall, it’s a great option economically and provides a large storage area and we couldn’t get all the beach gear loaded without it. I highly recommend, but wanted to mention the illegible directions and the potential of bending your lock notches in the base if only one side is raised for loading and unloading.

Omg this was soooo amazing and worth it!!!!
This was amazing! We traveled through sand and wind and hard rain even snow. We moved our whole family from one side of the country to the other and having this on top of my car was a life saver. Our jegs held up perfectly and was so easy to get our bags in and out of. We are so grateful for this and am so glad that we had this. My husband plans on writing another review because he was just in awe with how well it worked for us! So glad that we ordered this one! Thank you so much for making this!! The only suggestion that I could add is we did buy a long (15 foot) tie down ratchet strap and placed it on the jegs cargo bin long ways (from back to front) and tightened it only to where it was "snug" the handle of the ratchet fits perfectly in the slot where the front buckle meets and this just added some piece of mind knowing the top would not shift during high winds we drove through all weather you can imagine and many times at higher speeds this made a huge difference in the confidence and we did not have a single issue also adds a little more security if someone wanted to break in it takes an extra step but well worth the 2 min extra minutes it takes to put on. Overall 10000% recommended and will definitely get alot mote use in the years to come.

Gigantic, well-made, and a menace to any fly your car passes
Very solid. Took this on a 1000+ mile road trip and other than being covered in a massacre of flies and the branded stickers peeling it came out the other side looking exactly the same. No leaks of any kind. It's pretty easy to open and close once it's set up, too. Initial installation is a bit tricky. Lining up the locks can be finicky and you may need to drill out the holes a bit to seat the rack mounting screws. But once it's assembled it very easily locks and unlocks without issue and I expect it'll come off the roof and go back on pretty easily too. I lost something like 2-3 mpg from wind resistance but the amount of extra cargo space you can get from the JEGS more than makes up for it. An absolute beast compared with the much more expensive sleeker brands. 10/10 recommend

This company SUCKS
If you have any other option I would suggest it. This company provides horrible customer service follow through. I ordered and received this carrier in late February in preparation for a vacation trip in March. After inspecting the contents I found that it was missing the two keys for the locks which seem pretty important to securing the carrier during travel. I called JEGS and played “find someone to answer the phone”. I finally reached someone named Kevin and explained the problem. He asked for the number on the lock. As it was in my garage I told him I would get it and call back, which I did. Kevin did not answer the extension he provided so I pressed extensions until I was answered by someone in Custer service named Bree. Again explained what was going on and asked if she could provide Kevin with lock number which was 103, she said she would document everything and have Kevin send out replacements. After a week or so I had not received anything and called them again, this time talking to Ariel. She checked my order and said there were not any notes about replacement keys. Again went through the whole issue and told her we needed these as we were leaving on vacation in two weeks. She advised she would provide the information to the warehouse to get the keys sent. In addition I took photos of the lock to make sure they had the correct information. This was March 4, 2026. She responded same day and said she had emailed the warehouse and was just waiting for confirmation they shipped. Again not receiving anything I sent Ariel another email on March 7 asking for any update as we were leaving on March 13th. I received no reply and no keys. To insure the carrier would not open during the road trip I had to purchase a set of tie down straps to make sure the thing stayed closed. The product itself is nothing more than two drawn pieces of plastic, extremely poor quality and worth about 25% of what they charge. The whole experience with JEGS has been pretty frustrating and I would not recommend the product or the company for anything.

Great carrier for the money
Very good for the money. Went on a 3,000 mile trip and had no issues. Heavy rain and heat were no problem. It is light enough to be easy to install. Looses one star as the locks and support bars are a little fiddly, but if you are buying this for occasional use, it is a fair trade. You'll be paying way more for something with gas strut supports and all that. It seems like it will hold up well for my needs and I would buy it again.
