My baby loves this, and at one year was able to figure out how to turn the handle himself. Before that, though, he figured out how to pull the little red latch and make this open without turning the handle. Typical play with this is initiated by the parent and it holds the baby’s attention for a little while learning to operate the lever and hear the music play. My baby was never shocked or scared by it popping, but waiting 1-2 seconds after popping and started laughing and trying to push it back down inside. It’s very cute and not creepy at all, for those creeped out by jack in the box.

He loves playing with it. It’s very easy to turn and he loves to hear the music playing. He received it as a gift for Christmas and I was unsure how he would react to it. It is a good gift for the money and is held up to a 2 year playing it constantly so I like the durability of it. My only complaint about the functionality is that you have to turn it to lock it in some cases. It’s give a warning on the lid which is a good reminder to turn it a full cycle.
