How comfortable/easy to wear if you sit a lot? Can they help with keeping shirt tucked down nice in the rear?

They work fine. Definitely keeps your shirt tucked in the front and the rear. I hardly ever get to sit when I'm wearing them but they don't bother me.

What is the smallest length you can make them?

Not sure about that. The length they are set to was good for me but these shirt stays are extremely difficult to pun the fabric in. Make sure the clip on the sock is extremely secure or you'll get a slingshot straight to the boys.

Would these work well for officiating a basketball game and running a lot?

I use them in a working uniform. I drive a flatbed truck. I love them. Prevents plumbers crack! If my shirt comes up I slide my pants and the shirt slides back. As long as you're not wearing shorts!
