I have a macbook air with el capitan. will this work on it?

It doesn't work on mine. I had to use an old windows computer

Can the files be saved to a external hard drive?

Yes you can save these files to an external hard drive it works exactly the same way as anything else either on the PC or the Mac are used external cameras and save them on hard drives I also converted a NTSC Ta Pal Video onto an external hard drive and then wrote it to a DVD hope this helps

Capture screen only shows half screen from video, although did show full screen 1st time.

It only showed in my screen a small picture but when I recorded it to DVD it was o/k

I do not see why not . you are connecting the capture card to your player and then into the usb on your pc.
