Double-Sided Magic (Legacy Series Book 1)

Has potential but author has a lot of work to make it great
I'm writing a review of the first book in the series but I'm almost done with book 2 and I noticed a pattern in the author's writing that's bothering me. The book has a good plot but the story and but secondary characters lack depth. I want to tell the author to stop repeating how powerful the Legacy are and the horrifying Cleanse. I get this is a series and an explanation is warranted in each installment to bring new readers up to speed or if it's being read as a standalone. But is there a point to repeating Legacy/Vertu and Cleanse multiple times within the same book? I'm not senile. I remember what I read every 30 minutes or so. Copying and pasting to add word count is just plain lazy. The book also needs more storylines to setup the introduction of new characters and to add more backstory to develop each role. I think with good editing the series will be much more engaging. Otherwise every book in the series is just a repetition.

Starts strong, but fizzles by halfway through
Double-Sided magic set up a very interesting world. I wanted to know more about that, but we just get the top level bullet points over and over. The writing is very repetitive. There's plenty of action, but the story just doesn't get interesting, even over 50% in. What was going to should have been interesting, but I just didn't connect with the main character or anyone else in the world, so it was just tedious instead. On a positive note, this book did the best set-up for "I don't remember what happened to me and have to retrace my steps with an annoying and sexy person I'd rather not be around because I want to jump them and shouldn't". We get three solid chapters establishing the characters, world and other things. Then chapter 4 opens with the main character being woken up at a murder scene with no memory of how they got there.Despite this positive, after the rush of the initial mystery the book gradually became boring. Also, I wasn't impressed by the love interest's shape as a shifter. It was a little too Kate Daniel's for me.

Whiplash
Well the over line plot of the story was great the author really needs to decide who the main character is is she gonna be the simpering pansy ass that we have to deal with constantly or the bad ass action check that we rush through constantly.IWhat could have been a wonderful tale of a badass Magic user in hiding for her life turns into the tale of a simpering wretch Who just happens to occasionally have bad ass bouts of combat.Further I'm not entirely sure the author understands how bladed combat works considering she has the main character only use her weapons for stabbing and when fighting someone that she's actually trying to kill instead of simply slicing their throat which is already in the process of she has her withdraw that blade to attack again. All together the story could have been much better done and I had to force myself just to finish the 1st book I probably will not be reading the rest.

Decent pulp fiction
I got worked myself up so much on Jenna Moreci's Eve -- The Awakening, that I wanted to read something more decent than that. According to Amazon, this book is intented for the same audience, so I had a look.As for literary value, this is still not much, but if you want an urban fantasy with decent wordbuilding, stereotipycal characters with some additional depth and unique flavor and a likeable protagonist, this can be a good choice.I liked the dynamic between the protagonist and the main character -- the end twist between them was screamingly obvious, but they have an interesting chemistry and a complex, ever-changing relationship. The book's incorporation of magic into the normal world was intriguing enough to keep reading; unfortunately, the solution to the central mystery was a bit of a letdown. There is a lot of exciting action and tense moments, though. The author's storytelling still needs some polish, but she has a fluent, easy to read style. If you wish for a bit of guilty pleasure, you may check this out.

4 Stars... This book started off a little rocky for me primarily due to some repetition in the dialogue that seemed centered around the world building, however, several chapters in and I found myself becoming increasingly invested in the story... A world where all types of supernaturals (Mages, Vampires, Shifters, Witches, etc) coexist harmoniously with the humans after suffering the “Cleanse” several decades ago... One woman, in hiding due to her supernatural abilities, gets thrust into a devious plot that threatens to expose her and potentially end her existence; add in the handsome but brooding shifter and the sexy but sinister vampire and you get a thrilling journey that twists the reader through this magical mystery... I will definitely continue with the series and look forward to how this story will continue to unravel:)

Good start to a series
This book is a good start to the series. It has an engaging storyline, with interesting and likeable characters and it’s not too long of a book (around 220 pages). I enjoyed the new world development that the author did. The world isn’t too different from our own, unlike some urban fantasy series, and the changes made aren’t too overwhelming or confusing for the reader to follow. One thing that I really liked was the main character’s weapon of choice: sai. That was a nice change from the usual swords/knives that most authors go for. I appreciated the humor of the main character. She wasn’t too acerbic where she became mean with her sarcasm; she had the right amount of humor and wit for her comments. Some things I didn’t like was the constant repetition of how the Legacy are bad and how they must suffer for the sins of their forefathers, it felt kind of like a high schooler trying to raise the word count to meet the required length and the repetition of the same phrases of description, i.e. “supple lips” is used so many times to describe basically everyone (it got annoying); and the world building sometimes feels like an info dump where the plot is lost in the mass of information.Fans of Linsey Hall, Karina Espinosa, and Deborah Wilde would enjoy this book.

I enjoyed this book
Properly strong female character who can and does stand her ground without being overly rude, flippant or shouty. Gradual world-building, avoiding info-dump, and interesting world and ideas about magic. Couldn't quite get a feel for any of the other characters, to be honest, even Gareth, didn't feel very emotionally invested in them, although I liked and cared about the main character. Fighting scenes were fairly good and believable, which is important for me - few things annoy me more than 'cheap Hollywood-type' scenes where a supposed bad-a** fighter is pummelled to the ground at each opportunity and manages to barely win in the end of each fight! But I digress.Overall enjoyed this book, think it has potential and hope the world and the side chars develop more in next books of this series.

Fantasy lover? You Just Have to Read this Series
Such an innovative idea. A world where supernaturals may live next door. Where the Big Bad is a is a word in shadows, the Legacy. They are all gone? Levy has to hide her nature and bury her magic. But what if there are more out there? Who is there to fight? What an exciting heroine. Heart in the mouth adventure. Such a page turner. Read this now!

Formatting issues make reading near impossible
Thought that it sounded like an interesting premise for a story, but due to kindle formatting errors, it's almost unreadable! Sentences stop halfway through, never to be seen again, which makes turning the pages an interesting exercise in full in the blanks! Such a shame as I was looking forward to reading, ah well
