This is probably the best little midi controller on the market. The 49 keys are just enough for real playing and the action feels good. A great place in between weighted and most synth actions. Works seamlessly with a Mac and connects perfectly with Garageband and all my IK Multimedia products. With on board audio interface I can hook up my guitars and access ToneX and Amplitube. This comes with $500 worth of software. It's like buying software at a good price and getting the keyboard free!

The 1K Multimedia iRig I/O Workstation is a fairly useful audio interface that can function as permanent controller, or something you take with you on the go. I am reviewing the 49 key version. The 49 key iRig I/O comes in a straightforward, minimal package. There is some foam inside to protect the keyboard during transit, and a small box inside that holds a couple AA batteries and the two MIDI cables (one USB type-A and one Lightning). There is also a plastic iPad stand. The documentation is limited to two tiny booklets that highlight other 1K devices and has some brief instructions for the keyboard with Qcodes for software downloads. After you unpack it and start to use it, you’ll find both promising features and some limitations. The first thing you’ll notice is that the MIDI cables are short. This is ideal if you are using the stand with your iPad, but horrible if you have to plug it into a desktop computer on the floor. The keys on the board are not weighted like a piano, so it definitely feels like you are playing a keyboard. However, the keys are springy and most people will be able to adjust to the pressure sensitivity responsiveness with little effort. If you want to play a lot piano, it can be somewhat challenging, but for any synth applications, the keyboard springiness is good. The inputs feel solid and durable, as do the knobs for volumes and gain. There are touch sensitive buttons and sliders on the left for pitch and modulation that work just fine. Unfortunately, I find one of the biggest weaknesses to be the velocity sensitive pads on the right side of the board. I just couldn’t get a nice feel for the amount of pressure to strike them with and too often I under-hit them when working with drum kits. Having a ¼” guitar input with tight gain control plus a XLR input with selectable phantom power on a rig of this scale and price is one best features of this product. The headphone jack is 1/8” so if you only have ¼” studio headphones you’ll need an adapter, but for the type of people (multitrack beginners) interested in this product, it’s probably exactly what you want. Functionally speaking, the 49 key iRig I/O is somewhat of a mixed bag, but trends toward mostly good. Plugging the keyboard into my desktop on the floor proved to be annoying to me with the included short cable. I had it working with PreSonus Studio One, but didn’t spend a lot of time with it there since I had to sit on the floor. Instead, I simply plugged it into my iPad with the MIDI Lightning cable and booted up Garage Band. It immediately works with Garage Band, and works well. I was laying down tracks using the keyboard, playing with the pads with a virtual drum kit, and added vocals on my AKG condenser mic. After I killed all the other programs running in the background on my iPad, I didn’t have any hiccups, input lag, or playback delay in my headphones. 10 minutes later, I had 5 tracks of 12 bars each laid down and was happy with the process. The problems I have with the 49 key iRig I/O have more to do with understanding---who is this product for? The 49-key version is too clumsy to hold on your lap. The iPad stand sort of clicks onto the keyboard, but it’s not steady enough to keep the whole thing balanced on your lap. You need a table or desk. So the 49 key version feels like a permanent audio interface device, in which case…why does it have a short MIDI USB type-A cable and why doesn’t it have an included AC adapter for power? The 25 key version seems well suited to traveling in a bag with headphones and an iPad, but the iPad stand should instead fully click-in and lock to truly support using it on your lap. Additionally, this device shines as a starter audio interface device, yet there is really no explanation how to use this thing. The bundled software is merely ok, but newbies are going to benefit much more with printed instructions and some demos of how to get it to work with Garage Band more than plug-ins or Lite versions of recording software on a Mac or PC. And pros who are using this are going to already have their own software that they prefer, so why not minimize the software and instead include longer cables and an AC adapter? The weakest hardware part remains the pressure needed to operate the velocity sensitive drum pads. That’s a bummer, but not a deal killer by any means. The packages of software, iPad stand, cables, and AC adapters, though, make it a little confusing to recommend this to device to a specific type of shopper. The velocity pads and all these little questions make me knock 1-star off my rating. With all that nitpicking now stated, the 49 key iRig I/O is still a quality device. I think it’s great for beginners, especially when coupled with free, ubiquitous software like Garage Band. Plug it into your iPad with the Lightning cable and it just works, period (for the beginners -- you need to plug your headphones into the keyboard, though, not the iPad). Just think long and hard about what you want to use it for…on the go recording, or as part of a permanent bedroom studio set-up? If it’s on the go, get the 25-key version with a travel bag and some rechargeable batteries. If it’s for a permanent studio fixture, get a longer USB cable and an AC adapter when you buy this. And if you are buying this as a beginner interested in laying down tracks for the first time, above all, make sure you have some patience to figure out how multitrack recording and finishing works. With experience and time, I believe you could still continue to find uses for the iRig I/O down the road as an intermediate or advanced user.

I have been singing and playing piano for over 10 years now and wanted to be able to record myself finally on my computer. I wanted a compact setup with a MIDI controller to play piano and a connection for a microphone to sing while I play into Garageband on my Mac computer. It was tough to find both features at the price I wanted so I was quite pleased to find this unit. Setup was easy although downloading some of the free software you are provided took a little time but the included Sampletank software is quite deep and offers lots of sounds to use beyond piano. Great package here for the money and a nice all-in-one solution!

I generally like IK and had reasonably good expectations about this keyboard, but I was disappointed from the moment I pulled it out of the packaging. The body or chassis is a bit soft/flexible/pliable, and it would noticeably bend/twist/torque whenever I moved it around. I'm talking about normal use, moving it from one desk to another. It also seemed to lose the connection to my DAW one out of the three times I tested it, and the drum pads were next to impossible to trigger reliably, even with considerable and consistent force. The keybed is the only saving grace for me. For a mini keyboard, the keybed actually felt great, probably a top contender for the money. Otherwise, due to the build quality issues, I packed it up for return the same day I opened it.

At the end this keyboard useless on PC (due to latency). I use PC 99% of the time (vs iPad) Returning it today. It was the wrong decision to buy this controller. Latency on PC makes it useless as an instrument. Integration with DAW is Ok. A latency on iPad is little. I could use the keyboard with iPad for my practice during vacation(for a). Action - There is no action, but it seems like the manufacturer tried to build something that feels like an escapement. SampleBank on iPad makes a lot of distortions when recording/playing back all 8 tracks. - Original review ------------------------------------------------------------------ This controller requires some effort in order to prepare it to stable work and get access to additional features which come with the accompanying software. 1) The controller will start working as you just plug it in. It works as a MIDI controller just fine out of the box with iPad and Windows 10 (I did not try on Mac) 2) There is a newer firmware. The firmware adds extra factory presets for some software products. There is also a driver for Windows 10 which can be installed by a utility downloaded from the website. The naming of utilities and their versions are confusing. The firmware update procedure has failed once. It stopped at 90%. The second attempt completed successfully. 3) The installation on iPad is straightforward if you know how to use QR-code. 4) On PC the full installation will require 30GB of space. The most of the space is taken by sound files. I tried to have all advertised features working. It looks like I have achieved the goal. There is a good forum where you can ask a question and get a virtually instant response. The bottom line - this product is working as advertised. If you want to get the most from it you will have to spend some time. Be aware that some features such as VSTs may require higher(st) edition of DAW. For instance, Studio One Prime does not have the support of VST. I understand it is required to use Studio One Professional in order to get access to provided with SampleTank and other packages VSTs. Ableton LE provides support of VSTs. About the keys. Nothing special. They slightly lose original resilience very quickly(within a few days). It is not the easiest(in terms of preparation) controller (for the first-time iRig user) but the complexity level is adequate to the set of provided features. P.S. - I had zero problems with registration of the keyboard and all software (on iPad and Windows).

This instrument has been in the market for at least 7 years without any improvements during all this time. I bought it twice. I thought the first one was defective because the unit wasn’t powering up when 4 AA batteries were installed. The problem wasn’t solved with the replacement. I don’t know how the batteries are helping. It seems it’s drawing juice from my iPad Pro whether the batteries are installed or not. The onboard interface is very noisy and distorted. The unit is supposed work seamlessly with Logic Pro for iPad, but it doesn’t. It takes a lot of messing around with the knobs and buttons before you can assign controllers. I didn’t even attempt to try it with third party plugins. The proprietary cables are very delicate and short. There’s no MIDI connectivity for control of external hardware. It was supposed to come with a whole bunch of software and plugins, but they all appeared as in app purchases and are expensive. The only good thing about it is the synth action of the keyboard. Too bad! If it did everything it promised to do, it would be an awesome instrument. I’m returning this one as well.

I’ve been using this both for a secondary keyboard on live gigs connected to phone or iPad using either Korg Module or SampleTank. Works well but the gain is quite low sending to the main board, you’ll need to crank it up a bit to match another keyboard or pre-amp with your own mixer. Other than that it has great advantages, and love using it as a mini idea catcher while traveling. Great value in my opinion.

I haven’t used it this much till now. It has more functions people actually know about. It’s a rare item as there are not many MIDI with built-in audio interface. Basic functions tested till now are just fine.

Nessun'altra 49 tasti (non mini) è così compatta. Io la tengo sotto al display del pc per suonare vari VST. Quindi non uso le pile, si alimenta via usb. Ottima
