Movie-kinetics genius. Kung Fu Hustle takes the gleeful mayhem of Hong Kong action movies, the deadpan physical humor of silent comedies, and the sheer elasticity of Wile E. Coyote cartoons and fuses them into a spectacle that is simple in its joys and mind-boggling in its orchestration. A run-down slum has been poor but peaceful until a bunch of black-suited gangsters called the Axe Gang show up to cause trouble--and discover that, hidden among the humble poor, are three kung fu masters trying to live an ordinary life. But after these martial artists repulse the gang with their flying fists and feet, the gang leader hires a pair of assassins, whose arrival leads to the unveiling of more secrets, until both the screen and the audience are dizzy with hyperbolic fight artistry (choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping, who also choreographed The Matrix ). Weaving through this escalating fury is a loudmouthed loser (writer/director/actor Stephen Chow) who suddenly finds himself having to live up to his bragging. Kung Fu Hustle more than lives up to the promise of Chow's previous film, Shaolin Soccer : it's a movie made by an imagination unfettered by the laws of physics. Hugely entertaining. --Bret Fetzer, desertcart.com Stephen Chow (director and star of Shaolin Soccer) is at it again with his newest action-packed and comedic martial-arts adventure, KUNG FU HUSTLE. From wildly imaginative kung fu showdowns to dance sequences featuring tuxedoed mobsters, you've never seen action this outrageous and characters this zany! With jaw-dropping fight sequences by Yuen Wo Ping (famed action choreographer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix), KUNG FU HUSTLE will blow you away! In a town ruled by the Axe Gang, Sing (Stephen Chow) desperately wants to become a member. He stumbles into a slum ruled by eccentric landlords who turn out to be kung fu masters in disguise. Sing's actions eventually cause the Axe Gang and the slumlords to engage in an explosive kung fu battle. Only one side will win and only one hero will emerge as the greatest kung fu master of all. Unmissable !
To be totally honest i'm not a massive martial arts film fan as they always look so staged and awkward with really cheesy, badly dubbed dialogue and pretty terrible wire fight scenes, but i found myself accidentally watching this film late in the night and being totally drawn in from start to finish. The real test of how good this film really is the fact i watched it in cantonese with english subtitles which is pretty much no go for me - but as others have said it's worth watching in the original language with subtitles as the humour really shines through with the superb acting. There is just not a single moment in the film i didn't enjoy - the fight scenes are just incredible considering the age of the special effects. The humour is just perfect and had me laughing plenty of times. The violence is edgy but not gory. The love interest had me close to tears, even if it was a little cheesy. What can say, i regularly drift off from films these days through boredom half way through but not with this. Quite simply one of the best, most enjoyable films i've ever seen and totally unmissable ! - Trust me give it a go :)

Amazing movie, unfortunately no English Audio.
I love this movie, I have seen it a x100s. My children unfortunately wouldn't be able to keep up with the subtitles whilst keeping track of what was going on in the movie and it would have been good to have the option to hear the movie in English (no matter the high cringe levels). Due to the lack of options available, I have deducted a star which is a shame. I was looking for a way to be refunded as soon as I saw there was no english options, which meant we did not watch the movie in the end, but couldn't find that either. For future references, will always check the description to see more details before renting.

Crazy, zany and a visual treat
Kung Fu Hustle is such a thrilling and hilarious film to watch. It feels like a parody of a mythic hero story, with the main protagonist, Sing, a hopeless, selfish lowlife ultimately discovering he is a kung fu genius (character played by the writer/director Stephen Chow). One of the most wonderful aspects of the film for me is the setting in 1940s Shanghai - leading to the villains sporting suitably cheesy American gangster stylings of film noir, as well as indulging in glorious dance/musical routines - and the characters who live in the housing complex that is trying to survive against the corruption. Perhaps some of the cartoonish characterisations will cause offence (for example, a very femme, camp gay haberdasher is 'revealed' to actually be a secret kung fu master - obviously causing him to lose all his campness), but the charm of the film really wins me over, and I watch it every few years, as I know I'll love it each and every time. I'd really recommend this - especially to people who've never seen a Chinese-made film, as it really is a wonderful adventure/action/absurdist comedy gem.

Why is Stephen Chow not a global superstar?
I must confess to acquiring my copy of Kung Fu hustle on the cheap after remembering it getting a rave review in a certain popular film magazine. Not knowing quite what to expect (and not really being a martial arts fan if I'm honest) I was completely blown away. From the rather gory, noirish opening sequence to the cartoon-like escapades in Pig Sty alley, every scene was a delight and not a minute of screen time is wasted. One minute I was laughing so hard I nearly peed my pants, the next minute my jaw was hitting the floor with amazement at the sheer skill and athleticism of not only the star, Stephen Chow, but of the other support characters. Stephen Chow is incredibly charismatic, and the only gripe I have is that perhaps his character, Sing, is not on screen for long enough. Still, this is at the expense of the support characters who get their fair share of screen time (which is not a bad thing). This film has really opened my eyes to the delights of Asian cinema - and I'm not just talking the standard horror movies that seem to be the in-thing to rave about at the moment. Take a chance on Kung Fu Hustle and I guarentee you will not be diappointed.

Great Film!
This is my favourite martial arts film. Great fun and great characters. If you don't mind reading sub titles give yourself a treat and give this a watch, you will not be disappointed. I haven't watched the dubbed version but if you really can't stand sub titles get the dubbed version but would recommend sticking to the sub titled version. 5*****
