Capstone Games Ark Nova: Marine Worlds Expansion Strategy Board Game

Ark Nova is my favorite board game, and since I usually cannot get enough of it, I was naturally drawn to this expansion. I heard great things as it was coming out, so I got my hands on it as soon as possible, and I've got to say, it really is one of the best expansions I have played. If there are flaws in the base game, then an expansion should be able to fix that. With Ark Nova, the biggest flaw is that the deck is just so large, and you can sometimes get screwed by RNG. With Marine Worlds, not only did they add a mechanic to fix this, they added two. First, with every sea animal or similar sponsorship, there is a wave icon that progresses the cards on the display one time. This does happen fairly frequently, so players are able to see a much greater number of cards on the display that they will be able to choose from directly. Also in this expansions is the added "Find" ability. Through a university, or other means, you are able to search through the deck until you find a type of card you want, whether that be an animal type, sponsorship, etc.. This greatly helps increase the number of icons you have for what you need, making supporting conservation projects much easier. Also in this expansion are several new animals (not just sea animals), sponsorships, conservation projects, final scoring cards, and perhaps most excitingly, upgraded action cards. A whole new phase is added to the game where players can draft two upgraded action cards with a wide variety of effects that have a very noticeable impact on strategy. This adds a whole new layer to the game that further adds to the replay-ability. Finally, other adjustments are made to certain final scoring cards, conservation projects, and other scoring aspects that "even-the-playing-field", balancing this incredibly deep-in-content game. Overall, if you like Ark Nova, I would highly recommend this expansion pack. Not only does it fix some of the problems in the base game, but it adds more cards and mechanics that make it even more fun.

The expansion adds so many new cards and it makes the original game (my favorite of all time) even more fun! (if it is possible!) It also includes some great new tokens/meeples for 4 players in the shape of different animals. You can mix the expansion with the original game in the same box and there is no need to separate the two of them, the expansion doesn't interrupts the original game. If you know how to play Ark Nova, then the expansion is easy to include in the normal game. I love it!

If you like Ark Nova, you will love this expansion. It's just as high quality as the original and looks great. Its a bit expensive for the size of the expansion, but overall worth it if you like the game!

A very fun addition to Ark Nova that adds a new dimension to the gameplay. Giving you more options to tinker with your zoo all while having some new cool animals to look at and appreciate. Some of the additions are optional as well such as the new action cards with special abilities but I also enjoyed these as it spiced things up. All in all, it adds some more complexity without feeling overwhelming. Really enjoyed it.

My son (16) and I have played Ark Nova probably about 15 times before we decided we wanted the expansion. The expansion is great and adds new animals, enclosers, variety of new action cards and research to the game. The wooden animal meeples that you use to mark conservation projects you support are really nice too. Wish it would have come with a few new maps that when with the aquatic theme but pretty sure some fan made ones are out there. BE SURE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT PULLING CARDS OUT OF BASE GAME DECKS FIRST! I made the mistake of just shuffling in the cards then saw that I had to remove cards from the base game because some of the new cards replace old cards. Every thing fits in original box and I just stuck the stuff I replaced with expansion in the expansion box so I don't mix them back up on accident.

Nice addition to Ark Nova, but except for the "nicer" player's pieces, the new cards/rules don't add a huge amount to the overall game play. I would call this a "nice to have" expansion, but not a necessary one.

This is my favorite game and I have hundreds... if you have not played Ark Nova you dont know what you are missing... who doesn't want to own a Zoo?

Great expansion for the base game. The new enclosure shapes add variety, and the reef mechanic keeps things interesting. But the best part by far: the new action cards! Adds variety to every game and encourages flexibility in strategy. If you enjoy Ark Nova, then this expansion is a must-have.
