Will it grip a Macbook Air M2 tightly or is that laptop too thin?

Not a flaw. The stand works perfectly with the laptop’s vents up. The inverted logo is an unavoidable byproduct of the way Apple makes its laptops.

Instead of putting a macbook horizontally, will this support the laptop being held in a vertical position?

It should. You can adjust the width to whatever it needed. Just make sure there are no ports on the side facing down. Stand is very sturdy and should hold a laptop vertically with no problem.
