The filters usually last me about 6-8 weeks before getting gunky or turning pink with bacteria. I recommend rinsing and refilling the fountain weekly, and washing it in the dishwasher whenever you change the filter. I have a cat fountain and had a horrible time finding replacement filters. These work perfectly in my fountain and with the same quality. I especially like the sponges - at first, I thought they were too large, but they are just puffy. I rinsed them and pushed them in the hole. They work better than the sponges that came with the original fountain. The fountain is a little louder than previously, but I think it is because it is actually being filtered better for freshness. I am not sure if directly correlated to the new filters/sponges but my kitty used to rotate between the fountain and my dog's water bowl - now he only drinks from this.
