Can this be used as a personal item for spirit? Not carryon, but personal item.

If you only pack soft clothing/materials that are smooshable, then the tight AND the expanded size will fit a Spirit personal item requirements. If you have hard items such as ipads, laptops, etc. in the expanded version, it may be too big. Just a note: I tested the expanded version in the Spirit and Frontier personal items bins. It worked for both after I removed my ipads.

How do I wash this bag? Can I put it in the washer/dryer?

All I can say is I use the bag to travel only, and so far it still looks new. If I was to clean it I would spot clean only. Its the best travel bag I have ever had. I personnally would not throw it in the washer, it won't be the same.

does the smell of plastic go away?

When purchased I stored it for 1 month and when used for the trip I didn't smell plastic whatsoever. Won't travel with out it. So enjoy the item "best"
