Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s Read Speeds (Old Model)

I bought this drive to increase the storage available for my movies and TV shows on my media server. My 4TB drive was filling up. I admit that I felt forced to buy a Sandisk drive since I had previously bought drives from Crucial. But their decision to stop commercial sales forced me to try something new. I have to say, the drives are great. I only had one issue with the drive automatically ejecting from my Macbook when it was idle, but after a Google search I downloaded the Sandisk utility and updated the firmware of the drives and so far no further issues. The drives are small and quiet. The performance is great. I went with this model because I saw a review for the new model indicating that the new drive had failed after putting it under a sustained load. So far, no problems like that with this drive. Given the storage I needed and the performance I wanted these drives provided the value I was looking for.

I can’t believe how small this SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD is! It’s incredibly compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry in a pocket or laptop bag without taking up any space. The data transfer speeds are excellent. Copying large files is quick, and it has been reliable for backing up photos, videos, and other important files. It’s a great portable drive if you need fast external storage on the go. The only downside is the price—it is definitely on the expensive side. That said, you’re paying for a combination of portability, speed, and a generous 2TB of storage. If those features are important to you, it’s a worthwhile investment. I’ve been using the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (1TB) to back up photos and video, and it’s been one of the most useful pieces of gear in my kit. Transfer speeds are genuinely fast, so moving large batches of RAW files or video clips takes minutes instead of forever. Drives in this line are rated around 1000–1050 MB/s read and ~1000 MB/s write, which makes a noticeable difference when working on tight timelines.  The size and build are a big plus. It’s small enough to keep in a pocket or camera bag, and the rubberized shell feels rugged. These drives are designed with water and dust resistance and drop protection, which gives some peace of mind when traveling or shooting outdoors.  Setup is simple with USB-C, and the included cable and adapter make it easy to use with both newer laptops and older USB-A ports. I’ve used it for everything from field backups to editing directly off the drive, and it’s been consistently reliable. If there’s one small downside, it’s that like most compact SSDs, it can get slightly warm during long transfers, but nothing concerning. Overall, it’s a great portable SSD, especially for photographers, videographers, or anyone who moves large files regularly. Fast, durable, and easy to carry, which is exactly what you want in a travel drive.

This is a review of the SanDisk Portable Extreme 1TB SSD Hard Drive This Solid State Drive (SSD) is really tiny, and very lightweight. It’s pre-formatted to exFAT, which works with both MAC and Windows. Unfortunately, it DOES NOT WORK WITH the iPhone 11 Pro, which is what I bought it for. I read a bunch of great Amazon reviews, as well as YouTube reviews and videos. The one or two reviews I missed were the one’s that said this SSD is not compatible with the iPhone 11 Pro. I tried using it in conjunction with an non-Apple lightning to USB 3 camera adapter. When that didn’t work, I purchased an Apple lightning USB 3 camera adapter. The adapter has a built-in lightning cable, to attach it to the iPhone or iPod, and on the back side there’s a lightning port. This port can be used to connect the adapter to either a DC or portable external power supply. It also has a USB 3 port, that can be used to attach a camera, or other device. Once I connected everything to the iPhone and powered up the external power supply, I received the message, “Cannot Use This Accessory Extreme 55AE: This accessory requires too much power,” and the iPhone would not recognize the SSD. I checked to confirm that it arrived pre-formatted to exFAT, and it had. I ended up chatting with two Apple technicians, and an Apple supervisor. I pointed out that there are a number of videos that demonstrate the “how to…” use the SanDisk (and other) SSD’s to copy files to and from the iPhone 11 to the SSD. The bottom line was that the Apple Techs’ insist that there is no way to use an external storage device with an iPhone, even by using their Lighting to USB 3 camera adapter. Now, I’m an old-timer, so there’s certainly the possibility that I’m just not sharp enough to figure out where I went wrong. But, what I am sharp enough to figure out is how easy it is to return this beautiful little SanDisk SSD to Amazon for a refund. Love dealing with Amazon, but that’s another story. Even though I returned this SSD for a refund, I’m giving it all five stars, because when I connected it to my Windows 10 laptop, it was instantly recognized. Since I purchased this SSD to work with my iPhone, not my laptop, and knowing that I would be returning it, I didn’t try to transfer any files to it. Would I recommend the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD to a friend? Only if my friend didn’t intend to use it to transfer files to or from their iPhone.

I got this to hold my music library for my home server. I have been using it for about a month now and I liked it enough that I bought a second one. Transfers move quickly enough that loading the library over was not something I had to sit and wait on. It stays connected without dropping or needing to be reseated. The drive is small enough to sit next to the server without taking up any real space and it doesn't get warm to the touch. The rubberized body feels solid and the carabiner loop is there if you want to clip it to something, though mine just stays put. I didn't bother with the included software. Both of them have been running without a hiccup and I have no complaints.

I've encountered the frustration described by other reviewers where drive does not appear when plugged in, or unmounts unexpectedly and intermittently (appears dead). These were all solved in my case by using a quality high-speed USB-C cable, or using the super short cable provided with the unit. I think many consumers (including myself!) expect to grab any USB cable lying around and for all devices to "work", at least in a degraded capacity, but this drive is ULTRA-PICKY. Even my Apple USB cable doesn't work well with this drive, but I have an Anker 3ft high-speed cable and the device works perfectly - no problems at all. Once I got that sorted out, I've used this drive reliably for 3+ years for my Lightroom photo library, large Logic Pro projects, and video files. I don't track speed that much but seems fast-enough for my editing -- transferring 50GB in a few minutes with my old MacBook M1. I've just purchased a 2nd unit. I deduct one star because I wish the drive was a bit more graceful with everyday USB cables -- perhaps function with degraded speed and at least mount the drive (give a 'degraded speed' warning to the OS if possible), or include a label saying "For Best Performance, use high-speed USB cable". Perhaps using a quality cable is a no-brainer for pros, but there's no mention in the user manual, and in THIS arena of consumer usage, I think the product is receiving some undue negative sentiment.

Awesome product would recommend to anyone who works in content creation for photo or video 10/10 would recommend to anyone who needs to back up files for emergencies. Very fast transfer speeds ease of use 10/10 great value for cost, compatible with anything I’ve come across. It’s literally plug it up and use it very easily mountable. Mine stays plugged in 24/7

I bought the 8TB model for $839.99 and am impressed & surprised. These are my results comparing the SanDisk Extreme 8TB SSD to a Samsung T9 SSD. SPEED — best result of 3 sequential AmorphousDiskMark speed tests (on an M5 MacBook Air): • SanDisk Extreme 8TB: 984 MB/s READ and 991 MB/s WRITE (remarkably close to SanDisk's advertised 1,050 MB/s). • Samsung T9 4TB: 1,028 MB/s READ and 976 MB/s WRITE (below its advertised 2,000 MB/s, but max theoretical speed for these drives is capped by the MacBook at 1,250 MB/s). WEIGHT: • The SanDisk Extreme 8TB weighed in at 61 grams — approximately 1/2 the weight of my Samsung T9 (121 grams), despite the SanDisk having DOUBLE the storage capacity. PRICE (at the time of this review): • A 4TB Samsung T9 costs $978.98, while the 8TB SanDisk Extreme costs $839.99. So an 8TB SanDisk with DOUBLE the storage capacity of a 4TB Samsung is somehow CHEAPER. (The SanDisk Extreme 8TB is currently 48% off, but has been heavily discounted for months.) BOTTOM LINE: For ~$840, the SanDisk Extreme 8TB is SUPERIOR to the Samsung T9. An 8TB drive that is CHEAPER than a 4TB competitor — at half the weight — seems almost too good to be true. Overall, the SanDisk Extreme 8TB is an excellent combination of capacity, portability, and real-world Mac performance, especially for its current price.

I am very late in writing the review, as I have been using it for more than three years and it works smoothly and excellently.

Very cool delivery, on time, very happy with the SSD drive, it is a little more expensive than the usual one, but since my previous hard drive failed and I lost all my data irrevocably, it is better to get a reliable drive, although the price is higher for the sake of reliability and quality.
