Do the actual keys light up on the keyboard so you can see what you are typing in the dark or is it just lit surrounding the keys?

No, the keys do not shine through at all. it is a nice key set though. I am using the red dragon crystal-clear set, and everything swapped over perfectly except the top 4 keys above the num pad.
