Updated review - 1 year later
With the NW-QAC18 Induction Rice Cooker, Zojirushi continues the tradition of making the best rice cooker on the market! I have used Zojirushi rice cookers for the past twenty years and have purchased several for myself, family and friends (see photo below of sample models). Every kernel of rice is perfectly moist and tender. It may take longer to cook than other models, but the results are far superior. This version is a 10 cup cooker and cooks as little as one cup with the same perfect outcome. Pros: 1) Easy to use controls. 2) Intuitive programming. 3) Quality build overall. This housing is new and some type of polycarbonate. My previous cookers came in stainless steel and hard plastic. We will have to report at a future date if this is an improvement. 4) Able to use as a steamer. This is a new option and will need more experimenting. It may be easier and faster to use a steam basket on the stove. 5) Less parts to clean. There is now a built-in vent and comes with a self-clean setting. I used this setting to remove some of the odors of manufacturing. 6) The rice pot has a nonstick coating as before. We will have to see if the “double nonstick coating” performs better and lasts longer than previous models. Cons: 1) There is a detachable cord. I would have preferred a retractable cord. Zojirushi Customer Service responded that an FCC safety requirement does not currently allow for a retractable cord on their IH (induction) or Pressure IH units. 2) This unit is louder than previous models. Not a major factor but surprised by the slight increase in noise. 3) There is a small backup battery that keeps the time and timer settings if unplugged. Older models continued to show the time when unplugged, but that is changed on this newer model. Zojirushi said that this should increase the battery life because a terminal is soldered in place and can only be changed by a factory service representative. If the battery fails, the rice cooker will still perform normally when plugged in. 4) It is expensive. However, the longevity of the units justify the cost. My older units and the ones my family use are still going strong after 10+years! Here are some tips on using your rice cooker: • Wash your rice in a separate bowl to prolong the life of the nonstick rice bowl. Your unit will last much longer and will prevent the lining from scratching. • Use the measuring cup that comes with the rice cooker. This is smaller than a US measuring cup (approx. 7/8 cup) and will provide you with better cooked rice. • Keep your unit unplugged to prolong the life of your backup battery. This is not a major issue but may give you a couple more years before you have to replace a dead battery. • You can use the Warm setting to keep foods warm for family gatherings. We often use the rice cookers to keep mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy or vegetables warm so that everything is ready at the same time. Updated 8/10/24 The Zojirushi still makes the best rice. After one year of regular use, here are my observations: 1) The plastic housing is easy to clean, but scratches easily. This does not impact the performance of the rice cooker. However, it is disappointing aesthetically. Previously owned models were stainless steel (easily dented) and hard white plastic (this housing held up the best over time). 2) The nonstick pan is improved from previous models. It feels thicker and performs well. Older models were more prone to scratching and losing some of the nonstick surface. 3) The steamer basket is meh. It is just as easy to use a steam insert with a small pot and lid. 4) Still recommend that Zojirushi incorporate a retractable power cord. For a premium product at a premium price, it should be included to make it simpler to use. Overall, I would still highly recommend this rice cooker. Zojirushi has proven that it makes great rice. My comments are hoping that they make the minor changes mentioned above to make it even better!

Zojirushi NW-QAC18: Fluffy Perfection Every Time
We recently got the Zojirushi NW-QAC18, an induction heating rice cooker, and it has been a game changer in our kitchen. The way this machine cooks rice is simply unparalleled — each batch comes out perfectly fluffy, offering a taste that we haven’t found with any other rice cooker. One of the standout features is the keep-warm function, which normally lasts for 12 hours until the post-cook timer on the LCD indicates that the rice's quality may start to degrade. However, the rice still tastes excellent even after 24 hours. Incredibly, even with the extended keep-warm setting active for up to 24 hours, the rice maintains its superb flavour for two whole days! While it does make some noise during the cooking process, due to air being sucked in from the back and exhausted at the front, this is a small trade-off for such exceptional performance. When we open the rice cooker after two days, the rice is not dry, and there’s no water dripping from the lid, thanks to its effective venting system that channels away moisture during cooking. Additionally, the NW-QAC18 includes a self-cleaning feature, which is a huge plus for maintaining the unit. It keeps the rice cooker clean and fresh with minimal effort on our part. As with other Zojirushi appliances, the NW-QAC18 is a testament to the brand's commitment to reliability and durability. If you’re in the market for a rice cooker that delivers consistently excellent results and keeps rice tasting great for days, the Zojirushi NW-QAC18 is highly recommended. It’s more than just a rice cooker; it’s a staple for any serious kitchen.

The best rice cooker I've had.
A great investment. We have a bigger Zojirushi which we love. I needed a smaller one and this works out beautifully. Zojirushi is the best. Making rice has never been so easy and the result so satisfying. Other reviewers are right. Every grain of rice is perfected cooked thoroughly. I was deciding between Zojirushi and Tiger. I was a Tiger brand loyalist for decades. So glad I switched to a new brand (Zojirushi). I am very happy. The only dissatisfaction is the fact that this smaller version doesn't come with a spoon holder on the side. So the scooping spoon is either lying at the top of the pot or on the counter next to it. Either way is poor. Why did you skip on this detail, Zojirushi?

It's worth the investment
Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it takes longer for the rice to cook. But this rice cooker does make better tasting rice. The texture isn't mushy. (I like my rice to be on the firmer side.) I've experienced no starchy steam vent "boil over" episodes. I've never had rice burn in this cooker. The build is solid and the unit has many options and features so it's quite versatile. It has a generous capacity. It's easy to clean. It's worth the one time lifetime investment. I would recommend.

Best steel cut oats ever
Best steel cut oatmeal ever! Basically set it and forget it. No boiling water, no stirring, no "watching." I hate to cook so quick and easy is my go-to. I have been eating the Mom's instant steel cut oats with flaxseed but wasn't entirely happy with them. Now that I've had real steel cut oats, I'm not sure what the Mom's was. Haven't tried making any rice yet, but I'm sure it will be perfect. This is a very nice looking and well made unit. I was expecting it to be huge, but it really isn't. It's smaller than either of my air fryers.

Simply the best
Simply transformational, one of the single best purchases I've ever made for the kitchen. Perfect results every time, full featured, excellent Japanese quality. Worth every penny.

Modern Japanese Rice Cooker
Love my new rice cooker. It has a modern clean look. There is no handle. The top screen is easy to read. It has several cook functions including mixed rice. But takes quite long to cook about 70 mins. There is a quick cook function too which takes about 30-35 mins. Makes a nice musical tune when ready. Wish the wire was retractable.

Versatile, but slightly louder perfect rice than non-induction alternatives
First an foremost: this Rice cooker prepares the perfect rice you aways dreamed of. Easy to use and to clean, even if the cooking pan will get scratched easily (I only use the original plastic ladle and a sponge when handling it). Good size for 1-3 persons, nice to look at with plenty of meal options (white, brown, quinoa, oats, ...). -1/2 Star: In comparison to the non-induction models, this one is louder - not noisy, but you can hear the frequent humming while cooking and keeping the rice warm. I believe some people will not like the humming. -1/2 Star: You can only use the unit in 110V-environments. The power cord is removable, but the internal power distribution is not set for different input-voltages (like i.e. every XBOX). Last time I looked this model and all of the induction cookers were not available in Europe, so the use of the cooker is limited for me.

Superb once you understand how it functions.
An update: We used this to prepare some wild rice. There is no setting for wild rice, but experience has shown that the brown rice setting works well on rice cookers. We soaked the rice for half an hour, drained it, then cooked it on the brown rice setting with a proportion of 2 cups water per cup of dry wild rice. The results were astounding. I have never had wild rice so delicious. It was sweet and floral rather than bitter and earthy, which I thought was how wild rice normally is. It must be the induction heating that makes such an enormous difference. I usually cut wild rice with an equal amount of white rice to temper the flavour, but that seems unnecessary now. Of course it still saves money to do so. I look forward to using the other functions of this amazing machine. Original Review: I found the instructions to be a bit inadequate. I understand that because this is a very complicated machine, a comprehensive instruction booklet would be a bit intimidating. Perhaps one could be provided online? Having said that, the machine is extraordinarily good. I have had several rice cookers in the past, including a really good Panasonic "fuzzy logic" machine that I had been using for about 10 years. It produced excellent rice, even brown and wild varieties. I think most rice cookers work by sensing when the water has been completely absorbed, at which point, the temperature of the contents starts to rise above 212°F (100°C). Then the machine shuts off. How could that possibly be improved upon? This one seems to work in a more complex fashion. There’s obviously more going on than just sensing temperature changes. Ordinary rice cookers heat from below the cooking vessel , which increases the risk of scorching, especially on the "keep warm" setting. This one has an induction system that seems to heat from all sides as well. As a result, the cooker emits almost no steam during cooking, and stays remarkably clean inside and out. I actually haven’t tried cooking rice in it because what really attracted me was its "Steel-cut Oats" setting. I love oatmeal, but it’s actually something of a challenge to cook well. I have used rice cookers, pressure cookers, slow cookers, microwaves and just plain boiling on the stovetop. I have never been able to get the results just as I want them, at least not easily. Until now! All instructions for cooking steel-cut oats are wrong, including those on the oatmeal packaging. Following them produces terrible oatmeal. Through much trial and error, I have found that one cup of dry oats requires 4 cups of water, and a cooking time several times longer than the instructions indicate. Even this wonderful machine has instructions that don’t work for steel-cut oatmeal. However, by adding the amount of water I have learned to use, and running the oatmeal through two complete "Steel-cut Oatmeal" cycles, stirring in between, the results are the best I’ve ever enjoyed. I think it’s the way the heat is applied that makes all the difference. Another quirk that takes getting used to is that the timer function is not a countdown. It’s more like an alarm clock. It’s very counterintuitive, but once understood, serves well. In summary: a fabulous kitchen appliance (also very attractive looking) that is idiosyncratic but well worth the effort to understand its quirks.

Noisy but amazing
Yes the fan is noisy as many other reviews have mentioned. But when the rice comes out this perfect, and stays warm without burning or crisping for so long, it's worth it. Also does amazing oats (steel cut or rolled!), a great thing to wake up to on these cold mornings and it's not hard to program the timer to have food ready just when you want. For a family the 10 cup is probably necessary but for just two or three this is plenty. I'm still trying out new things in this machine but if all it ever does is perfect rice and perfect oats I'm happy.

Excellent. Works great for koshihikari and calrose rice
I bought this when my wife saw it at a super discount. We've been using our 10+ year Tiger rice cooker and I really didn't have complaints. But.. my wife wanted a new one and I felt getting something exactly the same (micom - micro computer) was redundant. Tried the IH and it's great. The Tiger was good, too. What's the difference? I'd say the rice feels more "fluffier" in the IH cooker. Was that worth the extra $$$ for IH? I don't know, it's really up to your preferences. But, if it lasts as long as the other Tiger cooker, I'd say it was worth the cost.
