How do you get rid of the bad smell and the way it discolors the rice and water?

The smell goes away with use its the new bamboo that u smell . I dont know what you mean about discoloration of your rice and water. You dont submerge your rice in water it has never turned my rice or water colors.

Can you use this with a normal pot underneath?

You probably can, if the pot is deep. You do not want the basket to be in the water.

Does it come with a lid?

No, the sticky rice steamer does not come with a lid. I use the metal lid that goes with the pot that I nest it in. Happy steaming!

what is made of copper that the description said is the "material?"

I am not sure why it says copper. The basket is just a woven basket.
