Will these stand alone built into a cube using cable ties?

No I don't think so I ad them fastened to fencing posts I needed to ensure they would not fall down and enable my dogs to escape. Well satisfied with product very strong hence needing extra support. I would purchase these panels again hope this helps you

Yes definitely okay for your average domestic cat, a lion on the other hand with it's weight and strength is another matter. I used mine for reinforcing concrete floor, the welds are strong and the galvanized coating is rust proof, I will be buying more for my daughter's bird house. Use small angle grinder to cut with. To join together, we used 4 plastic ties on each pair, not completely tight but almost. This way you can still rotate them, thus changing the angles. For chickens they don’t need attaching to the ground, they just sit there. Alternatively you could use soil/sod either side, or even some kind of metal tent peg?
