What do springtails and isopods do in a bioactive setup?

They are your clean-up crew. Springtails graze mould and mildew, while isopods break down waste, shed skin and leaf litter into soil. Together they keep a vivarium balanced so you spot clean far less often.

How many springtails and isopods do I need?

As a rough guide, start with one culture of springtails and 20 to 30 isopods in a standard 60cm vivarium, and more for larger setups. Both breed steadily, so a starter culture builds into a lasting colony.

Which isopods should I choose?

Giant Orange are the largest and the easiest to get established. Dairy Cow are hardy and highly visible, so they suit display vivariums. Mini Speckled stay small and burrow, ideal for smaller setups and dart frog tanks.

Will they harm my reptile or my live plants?

No. Springtails and isopods feed on mould, decaying matter and waste rather than healthy plants or animals. They are a natural part of a bioactive vivarium and safe alongside reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

Do I need to feed my clean-up crew?

Mostly they live on the waste and leaf litter already in the vivarium. If the colony looks sparse, add a little fish flake, dried leaves or a slice of vegetable, and keep one corner of the substrate damp.
