Do your kids actually still play with it? How often?

I bought this for my GGrands. When they are over they love to play with it. My 9 yr. Old plays with it if he thinks no one is watching. All 6 of them have loved this Grocery store. It is also very sturdy.

What size batteries are needed?

Yes you need 2AA batteries for the scanner to beep and light up and the calculator to work... but it can be used without batteries too just won't beep or light up when scanned.

Does the card swiping machine make noise?

It does not make noise powered by a battery. However, it does come with a “credit card” that you may swipe. The ridges on the card make a slight noise.

Are the two pieces attached or can they be displayed side by side?

Hi! The Grocery Store is assembled in an L-shape. The pieces may not be displayed separately.
