Great as expected

Works very fine but not working in a horizontally But ideal for plumbing job as pencil flame is good to protect back wall paint or surface.

Three stars because as others have said it is very hard to light. I’ve reviewed other comments discussing the way you need to hold a lighter and where to position. I’ve also seen YouTube videos on the topic. I almost gave up but decided to give it one more shot. I first disassembled the control knob (small brass nut), took out the O ring and blasted the hole with contact cleaner then compressed air. After reassembly I still seem to have the problem. However, after playing around with a gas lighter (gave up on the plasma lighter I also bought), I discovered that if I open the valve 3/4 the way (almost fully open), then with the lighter flame quickly moving around the edge of the brass tip in a circular motion, the flame would burst into life 🔥… hope this helps someone else also frustrated with this thing 👍 Update: I now believe that disassembling the control knob has improved torch lighting. However, there seems to be very little in the way of flame adjustment. I now use a small refillable gas lighter jet to light blow torch.

I should have read the other reviews, can barely get it to light with a naked flame, when it does it extinguishes after less than a second, pure rubbish

Doesn’t fit on my gas bottle very well. Don’t think the flame is great and wouldn’t use again. Waste of time and money. Took a while to arrive also

This is a pain to light. Used a fresh bottle or MAP gas. You have to have the gas set exactly and I mean, exactly right. The first time it was really difficult to light. Went back to use it 20 minutes later and I just couldn't light it. It would light then instantly flame out. In the end I gave up and binned it.

I used this to fab up my own water hammer arrestors. A replaced an older ignitor that couldn't give good Enough heat. This worked great after 30-40 seconds on the joint the solder just got sucked right into the joint.

I experienced the same issue other reviewers noted: the pinhole where gas comes through is too small, won't let gas through, and thus won't ignite. I thought that was the issue. Turns out if you don't hold your igniter right at the tip of torch head, it won't ignite. If you hold the igniter RIGHT AT THE EXHAUST of the torch head, it'll ignite (see attached picture). Once I figured that out, the torch works beautifully with a small pencil-tipped flame. Just make sure you're igniting it in the right spot.

This review is of BernzOmatic Model UL2317 Brass Pencil Flame Torch Head. Works perfectly. Lights easily, stays lit, allows tilt angle of at least 135° even though the instructions and packaging note that it’s for “upright” use. See video. In the video I used a 16 oz propane container, about 1/3 full and at 50°F. It is entirely plausible that your performance while tilted may vary if your canister has a different fullness or is at a different temperature. I do remember my previous torch (I’m sure it was a BernzOmatic, might have been this exact model) under certain conditions surging when tilted, by which I mean a large increase in flame. I don’t remember it ever going out due to tilting. It’s been many years, but if I had to guess I’d say it was most pronounced when the temperature was colder and the canister less full. I learned a long time ago that lighting a torch with a match is easiest if you open the valve as little as possible, and if it’s really cold, heat the tip with the match for a bit before you open the valve. I did not preheat the tip for this test.
