Will this bag hold a compact umbrella?

There are of course many types of compact umbrellas. However this bag will accommodate most of them Mike Bonnies Bags

have had my bag for a year and its really grubby. Can I wash it?

It is not recommended to machine wash, it can be either hand washed and air dried or simply sponged clean, please note that using detergents will possibly discolour the bag and may remove its showerproof quality.

can the shoulder strap on this bag be shortened enough to use the strap as a handle to carry like ordinary handbag ?

I think the handle is a little too long to use as a ordinary handbag. It’s definitely better as a shoulder bag.

how long is the shoulder strap

The strap can be adjusted to go across the body and the bag can sit at tummy or hip level....I’m 5ft 3ins. If you wanted it to sit on one shoulder it can be adjusted accordingly with no problem.
