Is the rod made of stainless steel?

It appears to be made of chrome plated steel. It's substantial and will probably outlast the motor, as long as it's not left outdoors.

How does the motor auto reverse?

It doesn’t auto reverse. It does reverse to the opposite direction when you turn it off and on. I find it doesn’t need to reverse 👍
