Great little book with some really nice images of life in the DDR.
Great little book with some really nice images of life in the DDR. Although heavily weighted towards Berlin, which is not a problem for me who can remember it back in the day, the images show people and places with genuine feeling. In fact for me the best images were of people just going about their day to day lives, with some iconic backdrops. I suppose we from the West, I cannot obviously speak for East German citizens, can look at these images as historical notes as we did not have to live through German socialism. It would be really interseting to hear what view is taken by older East German's. I would genuinely love to see more of Morgenstern's work.

Fabulous pictures. Horrible everything else.
Do you know those postcard books you see when you are abroad on vacation? Lots of photos of the main touristic places, written in 4 different languages and with a terrible design... well it's more or less the same with this book. The photos are really good. Really really good. They make you feel you went on a journey to the past. But when you are reading their description (at least in english) they are badly written, sometimes they don't describe what you are seeing on the photos and you can't help feelling that it's a cheap touristic book.I gave it 3 stars only because of the photos. Otherwise it deserved minus 5 stars.

Interesting
I have lived and worked in the eastern part of Germany. I find DDR history fascinating and adore looking at old photos of areas I know well. This book contains some very interesting photos of 1970's to 80's East Berlin. Whilst the book is not as comprehensive as I would have liked, nor does it show life in East Berlin, it is nonetheless very interesting. The only downside, each picture has a description, which have been translated from the German and many times the English version has major grammar errors.Overall, I am happy to Recommend thsi interesting book.

Sun and Socialism
Excellent crisp, mainly colour photos of daily life in the DDR, from NBI magazine. Really captures the atmosphere of the times, but the modern captions ( in six languages) are a bit snidey about the aesthetics of rebuilt East Berlin .( It really needed a bit of work after 1945, but why miss an opportunity to have a dig at the old regime?)Great value and very nostalgic.

Could almost be anywhere
Having visited the DDR a number of times prior to 1989 I was very dissappointed with this book. The subject matter is of little interset unless you think images of marching soldiers are intersting. Having to put in 2 images of the top of the TV tower sums it up. I wanted to relive the atmosphere of the city but failed. I also didn't realise that the sun shone all the time.

Nice, but small size.
Nice little book, but quite small and with even smaller photos because so much of the page is taken up by multi translated text.

Fantastic historical documentation -- but too mad the book is not larger
This is a rather small book. The small size does not do justice to the fantastic comment. Nevertheless, this book is one of the best historical reviews of the subject.

The Regime remembered in colour
For those wanting to relive or remember the "good old times" of the DDR this is a colourful and easy way to do so. Proved to be a good present for those that grew up in the DDR as was.
