Review: A good synthesis - I am not a Marxist but I am a philosophy student so this does give me a bit of license to say that this is a masterful little introduction to this stream of thought. It is surprising what can learn from these guides it really is. Review: A gift so I can't comment on the book contents - The book arrived on time and is in good condition. It looks interesting but is a gift so I don't know if the content is good or not.

A good synthesis
I am not a Marxist but I am a philosophy student so this does give me a bit of license to say that this is a masterful little introduction to this stream of thought. It is surprising what can learn from these guides it really is.

Fascinating
A very good book; informative and very quick and easy to read. I would like to read more of this series

Easily readable
Well drawn in comic form, yet it grapples with some complex ideas and history. You could say it's a dummie's (that's me) introduction to Marx his ideas and history following it's implementation through Russia, China, and other countries. I think the fear of communism in non communist countries like Britain and America triggered the Labour parties and the more fairer treatment of workers. Easy to read, fun to look at, though not easy to get your head through some of the ideas. Worth snapping up at the reduced price. I wonder how it could be implemented in 'conservative' Britain today. Was it a failure or would it stand the test of time? Very sad the way it allegedly went wrong.

Good introduction to Marxism
Before getting this I knew the basics about class struggle the bourgeoisie and the proletariat etc But this helped explain the whole theory in slight more depth than i knew and that all i really needed it for.

A picture book for adults - ideal!
Fantastic book. Very easy to digest and it concisely explains where Marx's ideas came from and where they were taken.

Awful insulting pro-neo-liberal propaganda
Repeatedly insults Marx and concludes that socialism is a ridiculous and impossible idea. It actually states that on the last page - that socialism is a silly and impossible idea - I had to read that sentence several times to assure myself that the author had intended to write this. Appalling. I found the disrespect given to someone (Marx) who tried to make this world better nothing short of sickening. Returned.

Worst of all
More than half the book is NOT about marxism. I understand the historical context and post-marxism is important but more room could have been used to explain the doctrine. Also, many pages about the Soviet Union, post war philosophy but NO mention whatsoever of WWII or its consecuences and influence. Some concepts are explained well, others are not, and others are simply misunderstood. Worst of all, the author, especially near the end of the book, seems to be selling his own ideology, a conservative ones at that. His 10 point criticism at the end is practically a political panflet. A shame. Other books in this series are great (see Nietzsche, etc.) but not this one. Its not a bad overview but if the subject interests you, go somewhere else.

It's important to understand that the Introducing series is in the business not of teaching you the entirety of any given subject, but merely introducing you to it. This, as with many other titles in the series, gives you a very quick summary of the movement and its history and touches on many of the significant branches. Believe me, you can always go deeper, and really one ought to if one desires anything close to an actual understanding of the subjects the people at Totem Books purport to introduce. What I find is that these books in general, and this title specifically, prepares your for deeper reading by giving you the gist of things, and thus allows you to engage other texts with greater sustain and keener acumen. There are other series of course, Cambridge has their wonderful, if frequently denser, Companion series, and Paul Strathern has made his career giving a similar gist in 90 minutes. I would say that the people at Totem have hit the so-called sweet spot with these though. Strathern is too often concerned with biographical detail for my tastes, and spends less time with the ideas themselves (though of course the life of a thinker is important to understanding them. Cambridge has wonderful guides, but even these may be a tad much for someone merely seeking to dip their toe in and take a look around. This is why I recommend this series. The graphic approach hopefully renders these concepts more accessible to a wider audience, and can indeed make what are often thought of as dull subjects, quite entertaining.
