I think it would. My son carries his Chrome book, folder, small lunchbox and pencil case to college in this bag.

How do the front pockets close?

They just have the flap as shown. There is no snap or magnet to hold them shut.

Can this bag be washed with water?

There’s no tag on it to indicate care instructions. :/ I would say spot-cleaning and hand washing is a-ok. It’s canvas. Given the stitching, I’d be hesitant to put it in the washing machine though. At most, I might put it in a pillow case to protect it and use the gentle cycle. It would have to be absolutely filthy for me to risk it though. This isn’t made as well as something like a JanSport backpack, but it should survive a couple of washes on the gentle cycle.

What material is this bag made of, and is it durable? Is it susceptible to rips?

This is a canvas bag, similar to canvas tent material but slightly lighter. So far, mine has been very durable.
