F**ked My Way Up to the Top: The Complete Biography of Lana Del Rey Using Her Own Words (In Her Own Words)

I was slightly hesitant to buy this book as it isn’t a formal autobiography, nor is it written in collaboration with LDR. But neither of those things are absolutely necessary to still be a great and informative book. As a relatively new - but nonetheless devoted - fan, this was such a wonderful read. The structure of the book is smart, well-researched, and very readable. At the start of each section or chapter, Woods provides the basic facts and some short introductory context (usually a paragraph or two at most). The majority of the book is comprised by very well-chosen interview excerpts or direct quotes from LDR herself. So indeed, not a formal autobiography but as the book’s subtitle promises, the bulk of text is “using her own words.”Super fans might think they already know everything about LDR. Maybe they would want more from this book? I don’t know. But I was perfectly happy with it. My only minor wish was that there was MORE. Particularly more commentary on specific songs. A few of my favorite songs didn’t get a mention but alas. All of the singles are discussed, including those from “…Ocean Blvd,” which at the time of this writing is her latest album (so as of late 2023, it’s very up to date). There’s more than 400 pages of content, including notes for the primary sources if you want to follow up and read more.In short, this is a wonderful book and fans of Lana Del Rey will appreciate it.

This book is absolutely incredible! It really lays out Lana's career. I was skeptical at first since it wasn't written by her, but I was pleasantly surprised. Buy this book if you're a Lana fan!

Read this in one day!! I picked this up to read for a few minutes then immediately knew my day was getting rerouted because could not put it down. I just finished and am EMOTIONAL. I was nervous about this book because Lana is so mysterious and seems to be particular about what and how she shares her life with us. Jared Woods PERFECTLY told Lana’s story, truly in her own words, in a way I think she would admire and cherish. This book was written so beautifully, I’m truly moved. Jared, THANK YOU for writing this book; I cannot imagine the amount of sleuthing you had to do, but goodness am I thankful you did. I have already bought this book for a dear friend and fellow Lana Stan and will be talking about/recommending this book for YEARS TO COME. Overall, this book is a beautiful account of our Living Legend and the only to truly do her justice. (Absolutely loved Billie Ellish being the first quoted celebrity at the end of the book due to how many times Lana has lost to her in awards AND Billie’s admiration for LDR— full circle).

For someone obsessed with Lana, this is a GREAT addition to your collection. I love the way the book reads, separated by album but added in bits and pieces. I can really tell Woods put a great deal of effort in it. My 2 issues were 1. The font chosen for Lana’s quotes was a hit and a miss. Keeping in mind our queens brand the font choice could have been a more angelic feminine font vs what was chosen. I wish it was some lush cursive. 2. Sad to see no blurb about the song Fingertips during the chapter of addressing Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard. I believe that song is a very powerful and impact song to understanding Lana and her past. I think not including it, at least a quote or a lyric was disappointing. But despite those two complaints, the book was AMAZING. I’ve been recommending it like crazy.

reading this book was like hearing lana del rey’s music again for the first time. i felt like i re-experienced her. i love that there is actual evidence IN the book and there are references. i totally recommend if you’re a newer fan and want to learn more about lana or just love her in general!

This book is great for fans who are beginning to know del rey and want the complete history, but I was really hoping that more of her interviews would be included instead of an outside perspective of her life. LDR is one of the most interesting thinkers in my opinion, which is what gravitated me towards this purchase. Although I did super appreciate excerpts from her Twitter and the provided context.

I loved reading this, probably going to read it again. I did get a few questions about it in public due to the title though lol
