WEN Cordless Electric Chainsaw, 16-Inch Brushless with 40V Max 4Ah Battery and Charger (40417)

Update: After almost 6 years, this saw is still going strong. Just used it with an 18 inch bar to drop a couple of large Norway maples. Other than the chain oiler leaking down if I leave oil in it, no complaints. Uses A041 tail mount bars. Bottom line up front: This is an excellent, high performance saw at a very reasonable price. Build quality is much better than expected for a lesser-known tool company. Battery life is more than adequate, and the saw cuts quite large trees with very little effort. Also, it's very quiet with comparable performance to a gas powered mid-range model. Unless you're professionally logging, this should be all you need. The only reason I dropped a star for value is because a spare/replacement 4Ah battery costs about 2/3 of the tool with battery, and although I'm contemplating upgrading my aging Black and Decker 20V yard tools to some of the other WEN 40V yard tools, they only come with that 2Ah battery (except the mower, which I don't need). I bought this chainsaw in response to a giant tree of heaven that fell from my property onto my neighbors after our last big storm. The tree was probably about 40-50 feet long, with several 12" or so thick trunks. I charged the battery fully before use, and spent approximately 10 minutes setting up the saw and adding oil, in no rush whatever. Super easy, and although not necessary for me, it came with one of the best-written manuals I've seen in a while for an inexpensive tool. I took it out back the following morning (today) and proceeded to chop over half the mangled mess of tree into manageable firewood lengths in about an hour. The saw easily took less effort and time to operate than moving the wood. The battery read half charge by the time I cleared the 30 or so feet that I was removing from the neighbors lawn and decided to call it quits. Very satisfied with my purchase so far. Side note: doesn't quite have the same effect as the gas powered models when you chase people around with it. Oh well.

I have been using this for the last three months. I am really impressed with it. I cut lots of firewood every year. I live on 5+ acres with lots of pine trees. I use my big gas saws for most of it, but this little saw is great for cutting small rounds and limbs. It is way Lighter than my 16” gas saw and nice and quiet. I like using this very much. I have two batteries. When one battery goes dead I put it in the charger and grab my other battery. The battery charges pretty fast. I like how the battery is not so bulky like the other battery chainsaws that I have used. The bar tensioner is really good as well and easy to use without tools. That is a big plus. Chain stays on the bar without falling off like most battery chainsaws that I have used. There is a hesitation when trigger is pressed. Takes a little bit to get used to, but I have started to like it. I think it’s a safety thing. Nice little saw.

I currently own two Stihls and I love them. I put up 3-4 cords of firewood each year and have 12 acres of planted pines to maintain. I have run chainsaws for over 40 years and this is my first electric. I recieved it today and put it on the charger and would guess that it took around a hour and a half to charge. It is built good but not quite as rugged as my stihls. It has one large plastic and steel wingnut for lack of a better descrition to secure the bar and cover; I love the design! No tools required to remove the bar or chain. To tighten the chain there is a round external knob you turn with your thumb, this is a simple and quick adjustment. When your cutting you simply loosen the large wingnut and turn the chain adjustmnet knob, this litteraly takes a few seconds and your back cutting. Being that this is not a gas saw the chain does not get hot so that you can reach down and pull on the chain to check for tightness without burning your fingers. When i got it today I took it to the woods and started to clean up between my rows of pines. When i cut a tree I could put down the chain saw and pull the tree out of the way or due what I needed to without having to be worried about a running chainsaw. Once you release the trigger the chainsaw is off, this is much more efficent than a gas saw. Love not having to pull start over and over, I estimate the saw makes 1/3 of the noise of a gas saw and obviously no fumes to breath. The saw seem to weigh about the same as my gas saw and i believe that is due to the quality of the saw. I ran for around a hour and still had a half battery, for the most part the battery life will be more than sufficent, otherwise you can invest in a second battery. I think that i will try and limit my self to 12 inch and other for this and otherwise beakout the gas saw. WEN has done a great job and love that this is made in the 🇺🇸 . Im have seen another brand that is a 80 volt with a 18 bar and am hoping WEN will come out with a more powerful one that can retire my gas saws all together. This has a 2 year warrenty and hoping never to need it but the selling point that put this saw above the competitors are the reviews about the great customer service in comparing to its closest competitor which had good saw reviews but horrible customer service reviews. I also saw some reviews on the WEN about the chain coming off which you have to deal with on any saw, I had been cutting for around 2 minutes when i cut one of the small nasty vines we have in east texas and lost the chain took a second to put it back on. After that I avoided the vines and had no problems at all. I adjust the chain every ten minutes and probably could have gone longer. I went thru around half of my oil reservoir in a hour and it should last for a full charge. Thumbs up, I absolutely love this saw and hope to ultimely be able to eliminate the need for a gas saw in the future. I am curious to see if the narrower kerf chain is avaliable locally.

When it comes to chainsaws, there are the well-known brands that are safe; however, if you lack the money for a $500 battery-driven Stihl, this is a decent alternative. Most battery-powered saws are meant for fairly light duty, so buyer beware if you plan to clear a forest with this thing. I've been pushing it to its limits this week by felling some dead standing trees up to 20" at the base. It made it through fairly well. I also used it to buck the logs. I have a spare battery and that helped me get through most of my task. Pros: easy to assemble and use, decent battery life, great for most around the house tasks (depending on your house of course), great Oregon bar and chain Cons: looooooong charging times, the body weight and style seem a bit heavy for its intended use.

Yes! I was skeptical. Chainsaw - battery??? - reliable??? - Cuts??? - Powerful??? Yes to all. I could not be happier with this product. Am I a lumberjack? No! Am I cutting two foot dia trees with a 16" saw? No! Am I keeping 2 acres of saplings, brush, up to 8" limbs trimmed and tidy? Yes! Does this product excel with these chores? Yes! Battery lasts long enough to tire me out.... I'm 75+ and got tired of yank'n the cord, buying the gas n' oil and wondering if the poulan was gonna start. Now - ain't got that worry. The Wen starts right on time... easy load battery... saw has some weight so not flimsy but not overly heavy either. Well balanced. The chain/blade that came with it got dull pretty fast so get the extras. Chain - change is pretty quick - pay attention to direction of cutters.... All in All - an A+++ from me on this product. I"ve had two gas operated chainsaws and two ION electrics. Of the four, this one is the best. My gas operated chain saw is now officially retired. Gas, gas storage, mixing gas, pulling starting handles to start, complexity of the gas engine...and now emerges the ION electric with comparable power. Why this chain saw?: Lightweight, excellent power for my jobs, safe bar, does not leak chain oil, uses Oregon bar and replacement chains, super instruction manual. I have about 1/2 acre of Palo Verde and Mesquite trees. If you know these desert dwellers, they grow every which direction and have hard wood. So I was skeptical at first. No longer. Sufficient power and battery life to do the job. I think I used 1/4 battery power to do about an hour's work cutting limbs 8" diameter and less. Now, please pay attention: These tools are dangerous! You need to READ THE MANUAL (excellent manual) and watch a few YouTube videos on chainsaw safety before using these puppies. PLEASE do so. I had one mishap in my chainsaw career that only resulted in some cactus thorns in my backside (ouch!) and sent me to those manuals and YouTubes -- profit by my experience. PLEASE. OK. Now I read other reviews before buying this Wen product. I agree that it does not leak chain oil. Another electric I had did, so I appreciate this. And it saves oil. Cool! Then someone said the stock chain has fewer links than a replacement Oregon product. I think so. I've attached a photo so you can see -- the Oregon is at the bottom. Uses S56 Oregon replacement chains. I bought a couple of them but haven't had the need to use them yet. But I like to be "at the ready." Old Army training. Next there was mention that the saw takes a second of so to activate after squeezing the trigger. True, but you adapt to that and not worth taking even 1/2 a star from the rating for that minor inconvenience. So, bottom-line, I highly recommend this electric battery chainsaw as an excellent value for the money. Spend more if you like, but this one is well made, works well, doesn't leak oil and has power to spare. Now one closing tip, my Amazon friends, on the power deal. Ohm's Law (I am an engineer by education, but only dabbled in electrical engineering): when you're evaluating chainsaws for power, do this: multiply the Volts of the battery times the Ah (Ampere-hours) of the battery. The result is the Watt-hours of power. The more the better. Don't be fooled by low Ah and high Volts. Just multiply the two and wha-la = POWER. Enjoy! Be safe!! READ THE MANUAL. I was worried this might bog down or not be strong enough for many tasks, and I might need multiple saws for a given project, but this is my favorite and there's no need for another chain saw for me so far. I'm cutting oaks in somewhat short firewood lengths in diameter from 4" to about 13-14" diameter. I'm amazed this saw just goes smoothly through anything I've tried. The chain speed is a nice moderate speed, which controls the cut speed. It actually goes down into the wood at the same speed (with no pressure- just saw weight) for 6" or 12" diameter (it's controlled by the chain cogs & chain speed), and the motor has no problem at all. I like that it's a slower chain speed than gas saws I've used, and it makes it much safer for a hobby wood cutter. Like it may take 25-30 seconds to smoothly work through a big 13" log, but it does it rather effortlessly and seems very safe. The kickback bar switch and trigger both stop the chain quite quickly, though it's hard to imagine this friendly saw "kicking back", when used properly. I typically saw for 15 minutes and then do some splitting, then saw 15-20 minutes and the battery shows half charge, and I charge it up when I go back to the house. The batter has never run low the way I use it. Watched a YouTube about chain sharpening, and sharpened the chain once so far with 5/32" chain saw file, and it returned to it's original cutting perfection. (takes only 5 min). SO nice to not hassle with a gas saw that sometimes starts in a couple pulls and mine sometimes wouldn't start in 20 pulls. And no mixed gas!

I don't usually write reviews but my wife bought me this chainsaw 4 or 5 years ago for Christmas. When I opened the box I had to act like I was excited about her gift... really thinking to myself what in the world was this Chinese junk..... boy was I ever wrong. I have 13 acres of heavily wooded land which I spend a lot of time working on clearing little bit at a time. This chainsaw has been put to hard use along with my gas stihl and Husqvarna. All of which I use regularly but I must say this Wen battery powered gets the most use. I liked it so much after using it a couple of years I bought the weed eater (which is junk) and the mower and blower which aren't too bad. They all use the same battery. I have bought extra batteries and they all hold up very well. Just don't let them get wet. It kills them. Over all I'm a surprised that Wen makes such good stuff. I wished the weedeater was better and they had more cordless tools. This chainsaw is by far the best. I would not hesitate to buy it again if it died tomorrow. But I just put a new chain on it finally and it runs great!
