T.D.F.Retail Therapy

This is one of the best relatively unknown Eric Clapton works out there. A bit of semi-anonymous experimentation on his part that succeeds at times forcefully and aggressively and at others with Clapton's classic slow hand guitar lyricism and rarely, if ever, lapses into an experiment better looked back upon in retrospect as an ill-considered learning experience that at best should be stored away amongst his unpublished basement tapes as a lesson for a better try next time. There's some hard, tough, loud playing on this that works powerfully strongfully and makes you feel the need to buy a high-wattage new stereo system so you can fully appreciate its forcefulness as well as that tender guitar lyricism he's so capable of. This one is definitely worth buying and keeping and listening to again and again in spite of a few decided weak spots where I find that it, despite God's now significantly advanced age, lapses into what I can best term as superficial gimmickry or even immaturity. 90% of this album succeeds magnificently to my mind. That's the best I can do off the cuff for anyone out there reading this.

Yes this is an Eric Clapton project though his name appears nowhere in the liner notes. It is one part R&B, one part new age and one part blues. Sienna is the reason I had to own it.

Going with 3 stars because I found half of the tracks enjoyable. Tracks 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, & 11. I am not a real music critic, I just know what I like. These tracks were pleasant and generally relaxing guitar instrumentals with some electronic background. The others had too many sound effects, muted voices or other improvisations that were not that listenable for me. The insert was completely uninformative and had photos that looked like an early version of Daft Punk. Waste of paper.I came across the music on the second track rather serendipitously and decided to check out the rest of the disk. It was worth it.

I stumbled on to this album looking for anything with Eric Clapton playing his guitar. I like all kinds of music so it wouldn't matter what he picked to play. I think its a great mix and different for him. I love it, because it is different. He can do no wrong!!!

Love the CD. I still believe Eric Clapton is playing lead and classical guitar throughout this CD.

This album is a one-off collaboration with Simon Climie. It is done well, but when I listen to it, some tracks remind me of the music playing during the love scenes in a Cinemax or Showtime soft-core movie. Don't get me wrong, I am an avid Clapton fan, and his guitar god playing is on point in this album, but stylistically this is a break from his typical blues infused rock songs. In my opinion, it has more in common with the movie scores Eric has done (Rush, the Lethal Weapon franchise, et al). This has more trance techno elements than even those movie scores; putting it in a genre all by itself in the Clapton catalogue. I can only surmise that Clapton fans will hate it at first, but upon more listening, will finds themselves like I did.

This unique CD a must for Eric Clapton fans. After listening I am not too sure it ever could have been a commercial success. The songs are not memorable and the sequence on the CD has an OK track followed by a poor track. It is an interesting experimental CD especially with Eric Clapton involved. I am keeping it with my Clapton Collection but doubt if it will get much play time. No where on the CD or case does it include EC with any credits. His fans will recognize his guitar.

Something a bit different from Eric Clapton, but very good all the same.

Gehen wir mal von dem einen nachdem hierzulande verbreitetem christlichen Bilde aus, dann - ganz ehrlich - möchte ich nicht mit ihm tauschen und mich ständig mit uns Quälgeistern herumärgern. Lieber Gott tu dies, lieber Gott wir wollen das, lieber Gott warum lässt du jenes zu und warum machst du nicht endlich mal das so und so, lieber Gott hier, lieber Gott da... Wir sind Nervensägen, da gibt es nichts schönzureden.Und einem Gitarren-Gott geht es mit seinen Fans da offenbar nicht so viel anders. Es muß irgendwo ein Gesetz geben - ich kenne es zwar nicht, aber es muß existieren! - in dem es sinngemäß heißt: "Wenn Du irgendwann in jungen Jahren ein paar reine Blues-Scheiben eingespielt hast und erwägst dies im Laufe deines Lebens auch immer wieder mal zu tun, dann mache zwischendurch niemals etwas anderes! Das zürnende Publikum wird dich sonst mit Begriffen betiteln, für die du Spielgefährten deiner Kinder des Hauses verweisen würdest, wenn sie diese in deiner Gegenwart gebrauchten. Untersage dir jede künstlerische Freiheit auch mal andere Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zu erforschen und bediene geflissentlich die Erwartungshaltung deiner Jünger." So etwa muß es lauten, das Gesetz, gegen das Clapton, Blues-Legende hin, Gitarren-Gottheit her, immer wieder mal verstößt.Die Urteile zu den kreativen Verstößen folgen prompt und hart. Nachzuprüfen bei jedem Clapton-Werk ab Mitte der 1980er Jahre, was nicht zu 100% als rassenreiner Blues zu identifizieren ist. Das Spiel geht also schon etwa 30 Jahre so. Je weniger Blues und knackende Gitarren-Soli, je größer die Häme - sowohl von den Profis im Feuilleton, als von den Laien-Kritikern etwa hier.Clapton sollte lieber dies, warum macht Clapton nicht wieder jenes, Clapton darf doch nicht so was, Clapton muß das so und so... Hätte er damals in den frühen Sechzigern ordentlich Blockflöte statt Gitarre spielen gelernt, hätte er diese Diskussionen umschifft. So muß er da jetzt wohl durch.Als er 1997 mal Lust auf was völlig anderes hatte, sich von den Pfaden, die er bis dahin so trat weiter entfernte, als je zuvor (und je danach) in seinem vielseitigen und erfolgreichen Musikerleben, ahnte er wohl was ihm blühte und er schrieb besser gar nicht erst seinen Namen weder auf die Platte, noch ins Booklet.Unter dem Namen T.D.F. (Totaly Dysfunctional Family) erschien das Album "Retail therapy", was im Booklet nur zwei beteiligte Hauptakteure auswies: den Produzenten (auch späterer Clapton-Alben und sogar des Cream-Reunion-Live-Albums anno 2005!) und Songwriter Simon Climie und einen gewissen x-sample.Zu hören gibt es feinsten Ambient-Pop, mal tiefen-enstspannt, mal hysterisch flirrend, irgendwie an die Alben "Zebra" oder "Pocket Universe" von Yello erinnernd, nur besser. Man könnte auch Moby erwähnen, um grob eine musikalische Himmelsrichtung anzudeuten. Und bis auf ein paar wenige eingestreute Wortfetzen, handelt es sich bei allen elf Stücken des Albums um Instrumentals. In die synthetischen Klanggeflechte eingewebt ist immer ein prägendes Gitarren-Bild, je nach Stimmung, mal akustisch weich, mal aufheulende E-Gitarren und irgendwie kennt man die Spielweise...Wer von Clapton ausschließlich Klänge wie bei den Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos oder den frühen Solo-Alben wie etwa "461 Ocean Boulevard", "No reason to cry" oder "Slowhand" erwartet, später sich lediglich noch über "From the cradle", einige Live-Mitschnitte und die beiden Robert Johnson Hommage Alben freuen konnte, der sollte hier dringendst die Hände von lassen. Das wird nix! Man sollte mindestens auch das ein Jahr nach diesem Projekt veröffentlichte "Pilgrim" wirklich sehr mögen (und ja, solchen Menschen gibt es! mich z.B.), um sich an dieses kaum registrierte Album heranzuwagen.Das Album verkaufte sich überhaupt nicht, auch wenn es von den Fach-Kritikern begeistert aufgenommen wurde (als sie noch nicht wussten, daß Clapton dahinter steckt), und als (um die Verkäufe etwas anzukurbeln) das Geheimnis gelüftet wurde, wer sich mit dem Namen x-sample tarnte, zogen zwar die Verkäufe nicht nennenswert an, dafür gab es Dresche aus der Fan-Ecke: Wie kann er nur!? Verrat am Blues! Wie gesagt, Blockflöte wäre eine Alternative gewesen.

Wir beschlossen anonym zu bleiben, in der Hoffnung, dass die Musik allein uns glaubwürdig machen würde. Klingt vertraut? Das Album blieb völlig unbeachtet, bis jemand Wind davon bekam, dass ich damit etwas zu tun hatte, und dann ließen die Leute erst recht die Finger davon.
