Heavy weight vinyl reissue of the highly-regarded New Orleans funk band's second album released in December 1969. As New Orleans producer Allen Toussaint's houseband at Sansu Records, The Meters began performing in the mid-60s lending their talents as backing musicians to Dr John, Lee Dorsey and later Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer. Blending melodic grooves and syncopated NOLA rhythms, The Meters' highly charged guitar riffs and keyboard workouts helped integrate the Crescent City sound into mainstream Pop. Although they contributed to scores of hit records, success in their own right proved elusive and yet their influence endures thanks in part the Hip Hop scene whose artists have long since sampled their tracks. Comprised of Art Neville [keyboards, vocals], Leo Nocentelli guitar], George Porter Jr. [bass] and Joseph "Ziggy" Modeliste [drums], the foursome were later joined by percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville. Produced by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn and recorded at Le Fevre Sound Studios in Atlanta, GA, the all-instrumental Look-Ka Py Py builds on the success of the R&B hits 'Sophisticated Sissy' and 'Sissy Strut' from earlier in the year. With the album ranked at No.216 in Rolling Stone magazine's '500 Greatest Albums of All Time', it's easy to see why The Meters deserve their status as the founding fathers of funk. Revered by contemporary Funk fans this is a welcome reissue for a highly regarded album by one of the genre's foremost exponents.

Funky miracle...

Dry SpellThis is the second album of largely instrumental funk from the New Orleans foursome, head by Art Neville. There are a few sort of chanted backing vocals but it is pretty much a cooking, organ, drum and guitar-driven album of red hot early funk. It has been very influential subsequently.The title track is beautifully bass heavy and backed up with catchy guitar licks and infectious organ swirls. It is pretty much irresistible. The same applies to the crystal clear percussion and sixties-style psychedelic organ on "Rigor Mortis". The tracks pretty much follow the same pattern, remnants of the sixties are kicking around in the "fat" organ breaks but there is a resonant bassiness and clever use of guitar breaks that make for a funky brew. The drumming is staccato, rhythmic and intoxicating. Unlike with vocal tracks, it is more difficult to go through each number, track by track, particularly here when they all get into the same funky groove. It is just an excellent, uplifting instrumental album. When The Meters got more soulful and added vocals on their seventies albums the sound and product was more fulfilled and polished, but there is a raw, funky edginess to these early recordings that render them pretty essential in the development of funk."This Is My Last Affair" must surely have influenced Elvis Costello when writing songs for "Get Happy!", just check out the rumbling bass, melodic organ riffs and drums. You almost expect Costello to start singing. "Funky Miracle" has a captivating shuffling beat, as does "Pungee". Also, the vibe on "Yeah You're Right" is just so captivating. Perfect.All this material just sound like perfect funky backing tracks and all have a pre-blaxploitation upbeat urban, down 'n' dirty groove to them. I have to say, also, that the sound quality is truly outstanding throughout, particularly considering it was recorded in 1969. Highly recommended.

Down to earth and solid, no self indulgent solos but v.funky
No screaming organ solos, whaling guitar solos or 10 minute drum solos, but water tight, straight to the point, and very snappy! Arthur Neville keeps the pieces interesting with down to earth melodies and wicked licks and fills on the organ. The bass and drums hold water tight grooves throughout with some unison figures between instruments. There are tricky little guitar parts, all in all making this very funky and a must have CD to the avid funk / jazz listener. Another great album from New Orleans!

Original-Bio-Art-Funk!
Mehr Funk geht nicht! Groove und Space gleichzeitig! Manche Songs klingen auf 'den ersten Blick' sperrig oder gar kitschig, aber dann setzt der verschachtelte Groove ein und man kann nicht mehr still sitzen. Durch diese Platte und die Meters weiß man, woher der Funk kommt und wer sich alles aus der Richtung 'bedient' hat (H. Hancock/Headhunters, Miles, Chaka Khan/Rufus, Scofield etc.)... Dagegen klingt der 'alles-jetzt-oder-nie-HiEnergy-Funk' von J. Brown gekünstelt - hier entwickelt sich der Groove ganz von alleine, nur mit Drums, Bass, Gitarre und... HAMMOND! Aber Achtung: Einige der Bass/Gitarren-Hooks zwingen die Heimanlage (und die Nachbarn!) zur Offenbarung...-> Funk für Geniesser!

funky del bueno
Esto es FUNKY de New Orleans, una de las mejores bandas de este genero de la historia, hasta el DR. John los tuvo en sus mejores discos: Dr. John's Gumbo, In the Right Place y Desitively Bonnaroo. Este es uno de sus mejores discos, pero ojo estos músicos no sabían hacer discos malos, de unos 16 discos grabados, no he escuchado uno que no me guste. Estos saben tocar y ademas lo saben hacer muy bien.

l'album rappresenta un pezzo unico del panorama funky di quegli anni. Spettacolare, nonostante i pezzi siano prevalentemente strumentali. Il sound del gruppo risulta semplice e pulito senza le note dance che caratterizzano il funky anni 80. Il vinilre rende molto bene il sound e il groove di questa band!

Ein Funky-Sound der süchtig macht... :-))
Durch den Instrumental-Titel "Cissy strut" aus den siebziger Jahren - gespielt von der Funk-Band "The Meters",bin ich auf diese sehr spezielle Band aufmerksam geworden.Meine musikalische Affinität zu Musik im Zusammenspiel mit der legendären Hammond-Orgel Modelltyp B3 usw., das war schon seit Mitte der 60er Jahre etwas, das mich schon immer sehr begeisterte. Wer schon einmal bei einem Live-Konzert direkt vor so einem Tasten-Fossil gestanden ist und den knackig glucksenden, analogen Sinus-Sound in Verbindung mit einem Leslie-Rotationslautsprecher gehört hat, der weiß von was ich rede.Bisher kannte ich nur Booker T. & the M. G.'s - die würdigen Vertreter des "Memphis Soul", von denen ich mehrere Alben aus der Anfangsphase ab Mitte der 60er Jahre bis in die 90er Jahre besitze. Ab sofort gehören für mich "The Meters" ebenfalls in das genannte Musik-Genre des "Memphis-Soul bzw. Jazzfunk". Was diese geniale Band mit ihren zwei ersten - fast nur instrumental produzierten Alben abliefert, ist Funky-Groove in seiner reinsten und edelsten Form. Spartanisch instrumentiert - aber genial und souverän dahingerotzt, nur mit einer Leadgitarre, E-Bass, brachial klingenden Drums und die besagte Hammond-Orgel...das ist Musikgenuss für den wahren Kenner und Genießer in seiner höchsten Form!Die Klangqualität ist dank des digitalen Remasters von 2001 bei den beiden ersten Alben ("Meters" und "Look-Ka Py Py"), die ich mir hier bei Amazon vor ca. einem Monat gekauft habe, auf einem sehr hohen Niveau und beide gehören in jedes gut sortierte Musik-Archiv.Da fast alle Tracks nur instrumental eingespielt sind, kommt da sofort echtes "Booker T.-Feeling" auf.Die beiden genannten CDs "Meters" und "Look-Ka Py Py" sind zumindest für mich, jeden Cent wert!
