Mozart: String Quintets K. 515 & 516

These two quintets are perhaps Mozart's greatest works for any chamber group. There was something about the string quintet, with Mozart favouring the addition of a second viola rather than a second cello, that brought out something very special in Mozart's musical imagination. He was, after all, an admired viola player himself.G minor was also a special key for Mozart (40th Symphony etc) and the quintet in this key is a masterpiece. However, its companion is scarcely less brilliant. Both quartets are given such imaginative, musical performances here that it is impossible to imagine them better played. The recording is also excellent. Close enough to feel intimate and immediate but far enough away to allow the sound to bloom and envelop the listener in a natural acoustic. Just wonderful.

I purchased a CD of Mozart String Quartets performed by Quator Ébène, which was a recommendation on BBC Radio 3's Record Review programme. The performance has a beautiful clarity and brings out the precision, delicacy and magic of Mozart's compositions.

Just a great disc that I've been listening to for the last week. I adore this string quartet and their recordings. These Mozart quintets are not as well known as the later string quartets but are equally addictive. I think there is another follow up recording of Mozart quintets planned. I can't wait for that one. Will be a day one purchase. Highly recommended.

Auch wenn auf der CD nur zwei Streichquintette von Mozart, Nr. 3 und Nr. 4 zu hören sind, ist die CD von einem magischen Zauber erfüllt, das beim Abspielen die musikalische Energie, die in den Kompositionen liegt, hervorragend entfaltet. Die Mitwirkenden sind: Pierre Colombet (Violin); Gabriel Le Magadure (Violine); Marie Chilemme (Viola), Raphael Merlin (Cello) und Antoine Tamestit. Sie beweisen nachhaltig, dass es sich nicht nur für Musiker lohnt, sich mit der speziellen Formation des Quintetts und der künstlerischen Interpretation dessen, auseinanderzusetzen.../cpg

Creative and poetic interpretation!

Eine wunderbare Einspielung der zwei unfassbaren Meisterwerke Mozarts.Steht gleichberechtigt neben den Aufnahmen vom Ungarischen Streichquartettund den Juillards. Die Aufnahmetechnik ist bei den Ebenes noch ausgefeilterund die beiden Quintette klingen hochdramatisch, aber dennoch schlank und differenziert. Beim g-moll Quintett hört man den nahen Don Giovanni. In den leisen Passagen ermöglichen die Aufnahmetechnik und vorrangig das überragende Spiel der fünf Musiker einen suggestiven Klang, der bei den alten Aufnahmen so nicht zu hören ist. Sehr sehr empfehlenswert.
