No you will need to buy paper as you would with any other printer

Does it come with ink?

Yes, it does come with black and colour ink. I totally recommend it. works very well!

Does it have an app to print direct from iphone

Not that I know off, and the only way to print direct from an iPhone or iPad is if it is PDF.

Why is the ink such a rip-ff for this printer?

All Canon printers cheap tp buy because they rip off customers then buying the ink suggest you buy from Printerinks they sell recycled ink jets which do same job
