From the makers of Downton Abbey - 1619, Virginia: on what feels like the edge of the world sits the first British colony of Jamestown. For 12 years, it has been populated only by men, but the settlement is shaken up when the first women, including Alice (Sophie Rundle), Verity (Niamh Walsh) and Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick), land in this breathtaking wilderness. Twisting storylines follow the disruptive new arrivals as they make an immediate impact and are thrust into a new world of love, desire, power and survival. While love triangles, bitter rivalries and fierce competition cause conflict for the residents, ultimately they are bound together by their resolute will to survive and thrive in their new lives. Written by Bill Gallagher, the eight part drama is set during a unique period of adventure and features an ensemble cast that also includes Max Beesley, Dean Lennox Kelly, Stuart Martin, Matt Stokoe, Jason Flemyng, Steven Waddington and Burn Gorman.

great potential, but it falls flat on its face
First and foremost soap. Disappointing. Modern soap in a historical setting. It had potential, great potential, but it falls flat on its face. That it receives a 4.3 star rating is beyond me. 1 star from me, not that it's that bad if you like soap but I just hope it brings the average rating down to what it deserves. It ain't much...

Don’t bother
Unfortunately this series just isn’t up to par. It had such potential however, it’s predictable and most of all utterly boring. It’s a shame as I do love a historical drama but I wouldn’t waste your time or money on this series.

A joy in terms of characters and plot, with the added pleasure of smart, resourceful women!
What a joy this series is, and how interesting to see this male-dominated Virginia colony through the eyes of women who prove themselves intelligent, strong and resourceful. The interwoven plots are intriguing, and one grows to really care about the characters, some of whom work through important moral, emotional and life changes.

Superb performances by the cast.
If you love period drama then this is a must watch. Jamestown is a 17th century English settlement on the edge of a Virginian wilderness. The storylines explore love, power, status, wealth, rivalry and survival.
