Good aid for pre-writing skills!
My daughter does not have the ability (or the age) to write numbers, letter, etc....but this book is specifically useful for practicing those skills that would ultimately allow the children to write legible symbols. I have photocopied a few easy tracing worksheets and mazes for her and laminated them (as I am hoping the book will last until the other daughter would be able to use it as well)....so she can use them again and again; once she'll get bored, I'll photocopy different ones...but you could definitely use the book as it is, without photocopying or laminating the sheets. I could see she finds the images entertaining and can confirm that they contain all types of lines (straight, in diagonal) and loops that would (hopefully in the near future) help her write numbers and letters.

Amazing
My 3 year old used to have a fist grip before using this book and never really enjoyed any workbook. This book has been amazing, she now holds the pencil almost correctly (two fingers and a thumb) with excellent pen control. Most importantly she has enjoyed the tasks and can see she is progressing. Best workbook to start things off with.

Perfect
I've reviewed a couple of these books. We like them all but for us this one made the biggest impact as a first writing/ drawing tool. My son (just gone 3) was reluctant to do a lot of drawing, but did 19 pages if this book in one sitting. It's very colourful and a bit less obviously educational than some of the others so he thinks of it more as "fun". Great book and a great series. Makes educating your little one (or supplementing) easy and accessible.

Keeps young minds entertained
I bought this after reading reviews and was pleasantly surprised! It is a lot larger a book than expected and I can see it being suitable for young children of variable ages. I bought it for my 3 year old and as one review suggests I use pencil so the pages can be used again. I was surprised how well my little one could follow and enjoy tracing the lines. I looked at other Kumon books as a result of this one.

Great
Great product, my 2 year old showed amazing improvement in pencil control after just using it for 2 days. We've had it a week and she always hold pencils, markers, pens, etc correctly now, due to this book! I would definitely recommend only using an erasable pencil. We erase it every time she wants to use it again. I'm considering pulling the pages out and putting them in plastic sleeves so she can use an erasable marker on it, to eliminate all the erasing I have to do!

Some doubts about age range
I have bought various of these Kumon books for my grandchildren to do when they visit, and they've been a big success with the 4-year-old. Apart from the first page, this one seemed too difficult for the two two-and-a-half-year olds to manage. So having got it specifically for something they could do, I'm disappointed in that respect. It's a good book for slightly older ones however.

Best book for practicing pencil control
I have tried many worksheets and activity books to help my 3 year old’s pencil control. With other books, He usually does one or a handful of pages each time, and needs encouragement. This, however, retained his attention for so long that he finished it in two goes, within 24 hours, without us prompting him to do so. I guess it’s because the book starts simple and then gradually it gets harder and harder. But each step is small enough and is repeated enough times for the child. I wish the book were wipe clean so we could use it again and again.

Perfect
This is just perfect for helping my 3 year old son learn to hold and control a pencil . He is not interested in drawing, but he loves working through this book. It is colourful and progresses through from straight lines to slanting lines, then zig zag etc.. He works in pencil and I rub it out so we can do it again.

Awesome book - make it reusable!
The quality of the paper and images are very appealing. To make this last longer, cut the book apart (youtube or google can show you the best ways to unbind a book like this - glue bound) and put at least some of the pages in page protectors or laminate and put them in a binder. I've heard some office stores will unbind books for you as well - sometimes for free. Then use with dry erase, wet erase or washable markers. Washable markers don't stain the page protectors/laminating plastic the way dry erase does.

Great introduction to writing
I always start my children with this book when I am ready to begin homeschooling preschool. I start them at age 4. My son just finished this book and my daughter did this book at 4 as well. They loved this book. By the end of this book they were more than ready to start learning to write their ABCs or 123s. The illustrations are very kid friendly and they loved the exciting "mazes" and other tracing practices. We did 3 pages (front and back) a day and they always wanted more. This is a great introduction to writing and pencil control. The book also works up from wide and easy space to trace in to more narrow and complex. It goes at a perfect pace for the young learner. Update 1/23/15: I still love this book. I have now bought and used it for everyone one of my 4 children over the years. It still remains the best book out there for teaching children to write.
