Good option
I will try and answers the doubts I had myself before buying this.- Sound reduction and tone qualityIt is effective at dampening sound wthout changing intonation. The effect seems to be balanced enough across the strings.I got this because my practise was getting annoying to the rest of my family, resulting not only in stress on their part, but in my practising being less effective. Feeling like you are torturing those you love is not very conducive to relaxed playing and producing beautiful music in general.- Does it affect practise quality?I would say mostly not.A good mute should dampen the sound without forcing you to change the way you play. For the moment, I feel that whatever improvements I managed with the mute on translate well enough when removing it. Some adjustements are required, but in any case cellists need to listen to their own sound continuosly and adjust. But whether I practise different bow speed, pressure, dynamic or sound points, the muted instrument seem to behave similarly enough when the mute is offThere is also the fact that, as an inexperienced cellist, the full sound of the instrument is annoying to me too when practising intonation or shifts and tecniques I am not comfortable with.Without the mute, I would end up playing quieter while learning, which changes my technique. Also, I can experiment with harmonics, which is frankly obnoxious sounding until you get it right. In my limited experience, the mute allows for natural harmonics to come out just fine. However, I do not play harmonics as a performance technique, just as an aid to intonation and practise exercise. The mute helps with that considerably.Still, I do practise some time every day without the mute on, generally at the end of the day, and I think it is a good idea to do so regularly.- Wolf tonesI have a very noticeable wolf tone around the E on the G string, when the mute is on.This can be tempered, but not eliminated, by gently moving the mute prongs laterally.Other noises are also sometimes audible, but can be normally fixed by moving the prongs.I think every cello is different in that respect, though.- Is fitting it easy?Out of the box, not at all. The plastic is very stiff and I would not want to force it over the bridge like that.Solution: boil some water in a kettle, fill a bowl and pop the mute in. Cover with a plate, to keep the heat in, and let it there 30 minutes.Take it out and and spread the prongs so to create a gap (where the bridge would go) of perhaps 5mm. Spread a bit the wings of the mute (the two lateral section which will go aroudn the bridge.Let it be for a few minutes and you will see that the gap will lose slowly by itself. Spread it all again a few times.Every time you fit the mute in, spread wings and prongs before hand, if the look tight.Of course, be gentle with the bridge when fitting and make sure the mute is completely dry, including the space between the prongs, before fitting it.You do not want any humidity on your bridge.I leave the mute on between daily practise sessions, but I remove it at night because I am slightly worried it might put too much pressure on the bridge.- NoteTo be clear, I am not an experienced cellist. I feel the mute works very well for me, as a beginner coming from violin and other instruments, while practising basic bowing patterns, intonation and shifts.

Doesn’t fit a smaller size cello
Only fits on a full size cello

Difficult to use
The delivery was fairly quick and packaging ok, however, the rubber was quite stiff, making it difficult to fit the mute appropriately on the cello bridge.

Excellent
Very pleased with this item - now I can play the cello at 8am on a Sunday morning without disturbing anyone! I was surprised to discover that the device seems to produce a lovely tone - it is quite simply just a volume control with no loss of pleasant sound.

Useless
It simply does not fit the bridge, the amount of pressure needed to fitwould damage my instrument.

Lets the neighbours sleep but wakes up the ghosts.
This mute reduces the volume very well and greatly softens the sound of the strings. One issue is that it doesn't mute the strings evenly - the higher strings are softened the most and this requires a little adjusting to to play correctly. Of course, if you primarily play with the mute then you have to readjust your playing when you take it off.The next problem I should note is in the lower register. The balance of overtones has changed so that certain notes are accompanied by high pitch wails, cries and "oooos" as if I'm performing a seance whenever I play a note lower than the open D string.
