In this fully illustrated and beautiful guide to our most functional utensil—the spoon—a master craftsman shares his life’s work: designing and carving exquisite, functional wooden spoons from branches and logs using time-honored woodworking skills and techniques. The simple, ordinary spoon is part of our everyday lives, from stirring our first cup of coffee to the long slurp of soup poured with a ladle to scraping the last bit of pudding from the bowl. Barn the Spoon is a master craftsman in the rarified art of spoon carving and a thoughtful proponent of the new wood culture renaissance. His love, care, and passion for wooden spoons is genuine and infectious. In Spoon he brings unparalleled color and character to his role as one of the world’s most respected spoon carvers and shares the extraordinary skill and gentle philosophy he applies to his life’s work. Barn shows how to use the axe and knife, from how they should feel in your hand to honing the perfect edge when carving your own spoons. Featuring sixteen unique designs in the four main categories of spoon—eating, serving, cooking, and measuring—Barn takes you through the nuances of their making, how each design is informed by its function at the table or in the kitchen, and the key skills you will learn. Stunning photography on nearly every page both inspires and acts as a blueprint to help perfect your technique. A celebration of the ordinary transformed into the extraordinary, Barn’s spoons take you on a journey into the new wood culture, from understanding the relationship among wood, the raw material, and its majestic origins in our trees and woodland, to the workshop and the axe block, and into your own kitchen. This gorgeous, full-color book is the perfect gift for the home chef, woodcarver, crafter, collector, artist, escapist urbanite, or anyone harboring dreams of a self-sufficient lifestyle. Review: What a Fantastic Masterpiece! - I’m a hobby woodworker and like any woodworker love the feeling of wood in my hand with a hand tool. So naturally this book seemed worth a try. Well...Not only does Barn show, describe and demystify a variety of techniques, he also shows you how to keep yourself out of the ER! Perhaps the most outstanding element of this book is simply the writing. Barn’s eloquence with words makes this book a joy to read. The man is clearly a closet academic - such a gorgeous writer! It leaves the reader with that Sunday afternoon whittle the wood while sitting on a log in the middle of the woods feeling. My wife, an avid reader, but a woman who has never picked up a saw simply loves to pick up this book. I highly recommend Spoon - it’s simply a masterpiece! Review: It is beautifully illustrated and very well written - A very special book. It is beautifully illustrated and very well written. Not only does it provide solid information on all aspects of spoon carving technique and design, it offers a stimulating philosophy of respect for wood and the process of making things. Barn is a unique character and this book is terrific extension of him and his love of spoon making. And if that isn't enough to entice you, the book itself is the most solid hardback book I have ever had the pleasure to handle. Highly recommended.

Great Book that needs a bit more
Great book., would not hesitate to buy it again. If you have never made a spoon this book will give you a good kick start. Well written and easy to understand. Even though the book has some great photography, it could use a few more illustrations of the processs used to carve. That’s the reason for a rating of four.

I was shocked to read this book and discover that not only does it very well detail the process and concept of spoon-making but it is also a subtly entrancing guide into our relationship to things, making, nature and, ultimately our place in the world as humans. Thank you for this special offering

A master woodsmith with an eye for beauty!
Barn the Spoon is an amazing man who can conjure spoons and other items out of green wood with some kind of magic. I know there are knives and axes involved… but the magic still eludes me. He is uncanny. Absolutely amazing!!

This is a really nice book on spoon carving by the excellent Barn, al round good guy and leading light in the spoon carving community. Lovely illustrations and good information on how to carve some of his best. For templates and more detailed information you will need to join his club though. Essential reading for anyone keen to know more about greenwood spoon carving.

A Master has Emerged
Excellent book, such talent. Another worthy mentor for all of us enjoying this recent “revival of craftspeople”, in every area of life. These times are refreshing indeed as many roll up their sleeves and pick up a craft, refusing to completely succumb to life’s distractions. Only after time, mistakes, victories, & determination do we sometimes witness a master emerge. Make way for one more; Barn the Spoon.
