Every Home Should Have One Of These
This really is an excellent water filter. Simple gravity feed means there are no moving parts, so nothing to go wrong, and that's an important consideration when your life depends on a reliable supply of safe, clean drinking water. This filter is ideal for use as an emergency backup to your household supply, and is excellent as a fixed point source in a base-camp, bothy or off-grid home. Essentially it's a two part stainless steel bucket containing two Doulton filters. Previously this product was drilled for four filters and supplied with two and two blanking plugs. The idea was you could fit four as an option to increase flow rate if you wished. The newer units have only two holes and are superior because they remove the risk of contaminated water seeping through the plugs. This is much safer. More than two filters are unnecessary in my view, but if you're generally impatient and really want more it's easy to drill your own holes and fit them. Here's the product page for spare filters > Pack of 2 Standard Super Sterasyl filters The Doulton "candle" filters are manufactured here in England, and the technology they use has a long and proven history. Filters such as this were in daily use throughout the British Empire in fact, mounted in magnificent stone jars rather than stainless buckets. The filters are made from extremely fine seashell, fired in a kiln just like pottery. It's a naturally micro-porous material and makes a very reliable and effective filter. Some folks make a fuss about fitting the expensive American "Black Berkey" filter instead of the Doulton but in my humble opinion that's a mistake. They make a claim of being rated for ten years of use, but that's the problem. Ten years worth of microbes, chemicals and pollutants is not a thing I wish my water to pass through. Better to refresh your filters annually if you ask me. It might cost slightly more but my health, well-being and peace of mind are worth every penny. So I stick to the British manufactured genuine Doulton filters, and long may they continue in business! A water filter such as this is an item that really, every household ought to have as a back-up. Equipped with one of these you can relax and feel safe that if the day ever comes when some kind of flood, natural disaster, terrorist atrocity or whatever catastrophe occurs and cuts off the normal domestic piped water supply, you'll still be able to drink safe clean water, be it from the sky, river or puddle. I think we forget sometimes how much our very life depends on the reliability of basic infrastructure which can, and does sometimes fail. These filters store very neatly as well. All the parts fit inside the bottom can, so it takes up very little space. I have two additional spare filters inside mine as well, and the whole thing sits in my basement, ready to be used instantly, in case of an emergency. Highly recommended.

Make sure the spigot is nicely tightened, to avoid leaks!
I was unsure whether to invest in one of these, after hearing various points of view. Now I’ve bought one - I’ll never be without it! Super easy to set up, just carefully follow the instructions. I purchased the additional stainless steel spigot from Signstek which adds to the overall look, as I read some poor reviews on the black plastic one supplied. I also purchased the Berkey stainless steel wire stand with rubber feet, which to my mind is an absolute no Brainer! It not only looks great, but allows easy access to the water from the spigot tap on my kitchen counter. It nicely allows a pint glass to fit under no problem! The water tastes great, everyone in the family love’s the clean fresh taste. There is no smell or nasty after taste, I can get from my tap water! This version takes 12 pints of water in the top vessel, which filters through in roughly 30-40 mins. Overall It stands at 64cm on the Berky Wire stand. It’s a quality looking piece of kit and I’m thrilled with it! N.B USER TIP..On a couple of occasions with the lower filtered water container full, the water flow has sometimes become weak from the spigot/tap. I put this down to a vacuum being created between the top and bottom vessels. To remedy the issue just slightly move the upper vessel to break the seal releasing the vacuum, which will return the water to a full flow.

10 year filter!
Love this thing, for which I have bought the 10 year filter from a well known auction website, where they are known as 'Black Berkey Compatible water filters'. Water is lovely, and I'm happy and set for any eventuality. I bought this from Amazon Warehouse, and have to say I was not impressed to find that they sent out the used filters with it, which were mouldy from not being dried when the item was returned. I have to say I think this is a health hazard and I'm surprised that they would do that; they are much more careful of data storage than of potential biological contamination, I guess. I did complain and they eventually, after negotiation, gave me a 50% refund, so I could keep the unit and use the new filters I already mentioned. This meant that the unit was a total bargain, so in that sense I would recommend it. However it didn't come with the plugs for the filter holes. Probably lost by original purchaser. The risk you take when buying returned items from Amazon Warehouse.

Great water filter, poor design
This filter transforms horrible tasting water into pure beautiful tasting water and is a good looking unit. However it’s poorly designed- the only way to get the water to flow is to disengage the two parts to let the air in. Irritating.

Good Quality Drinking Water without Plastic Bottles
The British Berkefeld Stainless Steel Water Filter is a perfect product. The filtration gives excellent results, removing chemicals and unwanted metals from tap water. It fits comfortably on the worktop alongside the sink and is not obtrusive. Saves buying plastic bottles water and is much fresher tasting. Also costs less and saves lifting and transporting from store to home. Will purchase an additional unit for the bathroom.

This is a high quality item
This is a high quality item, although as others have said the tap is flimsy and I will replace it with a stainless steel one. A much more agreeable and appropriate price than the Berkey equivalent, although I may well use their filters as I know first hand that they work with water other than tap water. People have expressed concerns about how to tell how much water is in the bottom section before topping up. I find the fit between the two sections is just loose enough to allow the top to be lifted sufficiently to look inside the base. So no need for floods or the expensive (and ugly) level indicators that are available.

WARNING! Will leak BIG TIME if "overfilled" (but excellent customer service)
I've dropped a star on this product because even thought it is excellent it leaks. Not as I thought from other reviews from the bottom or tap as you might expect. But from the join between the two compartments. (it's basically two buckets sitting on top of each other) I thought when I tested it and it didn't leak I was okay. But once I had run one fill of water through I topped it up and that's when I walked in to a flooded kitchen. Lesson learned. The water had nowhere to go except out of the rim where the two compartments sit on top of each other. So that's 5-6 pints of water all over your worktop and floor. This should have been pointed out in the literature IN BIG BOLD LETTERS but there is no mention. I think this is because the makers cynically don't want to put any doubt in purchaser but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth (and wet socks) not to issue a simple warning that the filter can only take one fill and not to refill until the lower compartment is drained. Fortunately I only got a wet kitchen floor but for others it might cause cupboard damage so you have been warned! UPDATE: Whilst my previous criticism still stands, I've added a star because 6 years on an internal plastic value failed and a quick email exchange with the manufacturer had them send out a replacement tap, free of charge within a couple of days, so excellent after sales customer service.

Filters Work Well, But Looks Like It Belongs in World War 2
ÂŁ160+ for two empty steel cans with holes drilled in the bottom is quite frankly, shocking. Just my personal opinion of course, but I think this filter looks terrible in the home; it's huge and looks like some kind of tea urn from WW2. In fact, three people already asked how come I had a huge tea urn in my kitchen. The actual Doulton filters themselves, or candles as they're referred to work well. They're made from hard ceramic (think clay pot which has been fired) with activated charcoal granules inside. The water slowly seeps through the ceramic outer and drips through the charcoal. My tap water smells quite strong and after going through the filters there's no smell or taste whatsoever. Exactly as water should be. These ceramic filters work well, it's just a shame about the looks of the huge British Berkefeld housing.

Estoy encantada!!

In Ordnung, Qualitätsprodukt.
