F off robbers go next door!!!!
This lock looks and feels solid and is well known by locksmiths as a good lock that you can depend on to work well, with a London bar on the lock body and one on the keep to prevent punch out it has added power? The London bars are coach bolted through the door to be seen from the outside, as it is worth letting the bad guy know before he starts to work on your door! With the U channel and rail to stop jam spreading, this really tells the bad guys to walk on past! the 5 lever mortice and the 3 star Yale euro it means the robbers have to have many skills to get in! The added long throw lock and another euro deadbolt on the top rail I feel safe to leave my house for long periods, Having some homemade exterior warding made from steel hanging around the lock on the top rail makes it harder to use a tension wrench, this makes it harder to pick the lock! Bolting the jam to the frame with 3 inch bolts helps prevent kick in attacks as do hinge bolts, keep everything tight with insulation to reduce any movements in the door too! Outside lights are a good way to put off robbers, stickers on the glass panels can help laminate the glass making it harder to break! The stickers like mine can be of a barking dog, Karate and telling of security marked property to put them off entering in the first place? My dog had a big water bowl beside my front door, often with a big well chewed bone! Image is everything when defending your home, buy some neighbourhood watch sticker even if there is no scheme in place as a robber may not know that? Think about what you do and don't be the one house with less security than the rest, that's the one they're searching for after all? Don't feel scared but don't be afraid to look like you are, have as I do an alarm but have dummy alarm boxes to all sides of the house. A silent alarm sticker costs very little but sews the seeds of doubt that might with other things cause them to walk away from your house before they do damage to it, Imagine you were thinking about robbing your house what would put you off it most and why, most robbers are poorly skilled but some are good so by really testing the good ones you have eliminated the badly skilled ones! Your house is worth it, you may have seen the devastated look on the face of one who has been robbed so don't let your self be one of them?

Rock solid but…
Lovely, big, strong and high security lock but: a) the mechanism is a bit rough. Maybe it will get smoother with use; b) the lever returns to horizontal when catch held back with button and it can be difficult to tell if it is held back especially when c) the ‘bolt’ projects about 3mm from the main case even when held back by the button. This means the door frame fitting has to be sunk more into the frame otherwise the catch is released upon closing. Not fun if you haven’t got a key! d) the rim cylinder seems a bit cheap

Sturdy
Bought this to replace my broken one (quite old). Sturdy construction and looks fantastic. The latch sticks out quite fast so had to chip out the base plate area so it could close easy. The handle is not solid around the back which feels bad when using it to open however. Would be better if it was solid metal.

SOLID LOCK
HIGH QUALITY LOCK, SECURE, GOOD LOOKS, NOT TOO DIFFICULT TO FIT. YOU GET TEMPLATES, RECOMENDED.

Quality: one step forwards, one step back. And a step sideways.
Bought to replace a 26 year old model of this lock – the snib no longer worked due to wear on the internal mechanism. NOTE: the lock is NOT a direct one-to-one replacement for older iterations (remember, my previous one was 26 years old)… STEP BACK As others have mentioned, costs have been cut by hollowing out the handle, which makes it quite uncomfortable to use. I filled the void with mouldable plastic, and now it's comfortable again. STEP FORWARD The latch is longer, protruding several millimetres further than before. I opine that this makes it harder to force the door, whilst allowing doors with more play to benefit from the lock's security. The backset is ever so slightly thicker; if you use the existing holes, the backset will sit just a tad proud of the edge of the door. No more than 1mm at most. But you need to be aware of it. STEP SIDEWAYS The keep (the part fits onto the door frame and keeps the latch in place when the door is closed) is shorter and wider. Depending on how tightly your door fits, you may need to chisel a sliver of wood from the frame to reposition the keep. The difference in width is tiny, but enough to make a difference. All in all, I would recommend this lock.

Avoid - Cost cuts have made this lock uncomfortable to use
This was my third BS1 Nightlatch, after installing one in my previous house, then another at my current place - I used to love these! I wanted to change the barrels because the key stuck occasionally in the outside lock. I phoned Yale for advice and was told that any Rim lock barrel would fit as a replacement for external entry, but I would need to use the old key to deadlock the door from the inside, therefore requiring 2 keys for the one lock! They told me my best bet was to buy another complete BS1 lock - which is what I did. Fitting to swap the existing lock was easy, but when I went to test the door, I realised that Yale had changed the product quality. The handle on the new lock was thinner and rather than having a rounded back it had thin hard ridges and a wide groove on it's rear - I guess to save on metal in manufacturing (see photos). This made the the door handle feel cheap and uncomfortable in use every time I opened the front door. My wife also noticed instantly and was most critical of this penny-pinching tactic in the new nightlatch. In opening the door, my fingers pull against these hard edges. What were they thinking - saving a few pence by making the one place people interact with their product feel uncomfortable, as if something is missing from it? For me, this is the most egregious and willful abandonment of ergonomics in the pursuit of savings on what was formerly a "prestige" product. Well done Yale... I called Yale again to make sure this product was genuine after seeing the new "economy" handle and they assured me that it was. They also told me that Amazon would refund me, even though I had cut the connecting bar to fit the lock before noticing the cheapening of the lock furniture! Talk about buck-passing, Yale... The photos I took after disassembling my old Yale (attached to this review) show how the internal key barrel is punched into the handle and can not be easily replaced. So I can not swap handles as I planned to without attempting to drill out the old lock. Yale (don't but) should provide a kit to people wishing to change both barrels to fit the same key - ideally with a properly made handle! I bought these locks because they felt solid and pleasing to operate. I appreciated the extra quality I got for paying slightly more for my lock, Sadly this is not true any more and Yale have gone down massively in my opinion for making a lock that seems painful to use!

Ticks the boxes but poor design
Bit disappointed with this. The front plate of the main lock wasn't at 90 degrees so doesn't sit completely flat on the edge of the door. The push button keeps the latch open but doesn't allow you to dead-lock it when closed. To be fair, there's another little protrusion below the catch which rubs along the fitting on the door jam and dead-locks it automatically when it's shut, leaving a mark on the plate on the jam. You can also turn a key from the inside, which I presume is to prevent a burglar exiting through your front door after breaking in through a back window (providing you remember to remove the inside key. The latch itself seems to protrude too far which means that it's almost impossible to just pull the door shut when you go out; you have to use a key to retract the latch in order to close the door. And getting the key in the lock from the outside is extremely fiddly (really!). The door pull on the outside is too thin, making it dfficult to get your fingers underneath to pull the door shut, which you won't be able to do anyway because the catch protrudes too far to allow it to slam shut. Oh, and I would like to take the opportunity to rewrite the assembly instructions for the real world.

Yale Locks BS1 Nightlatch British Standard
I was asked a question, but by the time I came to respond the discussion had been closed down: so here is some information which may help> The question was about suitability for an external gate. This is a high spec deadlock to British Standard 3621: the deadlock can be set or opened from both sides using the key. I fitted this lock to my front door at the insistence of my insurer who would no longer accept my vintage 1965 Yale deadlock as suitable for purpose because it was not certified to the BS. This lock is probably over engineered for use on an external gate where a determined "visitor" could probably climb over. A less expensive device would probably suffice. The dimensions in mms are: lock 90w x 90h x 90d (90d is 30 for handle / 30 for lock body / 30 for fixing plate at right angles to the door surface) opposing plate /socket 20w x 90h x 70d (70d is 30 for socket / 40 for the fixing plate at right angles to the door frame) The hole through the door for external locking is centred 60 from the door edge So to make secure use of this lock the door / gate must be more than 30 thick and the frame must be more than 40 thick. Hope this helps
