Fretboard Fluency: The Creative Guide to Mastering the Guitar Fretboard Fluency teaches you the sequential patterns, interval skips, triads and arpeggios that turn scales into usable melodic tools for soloing. You will develop your musical ears while also building excellent technique and creative solos. Build Technique and Master Every Scale in Every Key in Every Position Fretboard Fluency also gets you intimately acquainted with the guitar neck by teaching you how to play every important scale, in every key in every position on the fretboard. By using just five scale shapes you will open up the fretboard and access every scale or mode anywhere on the guitar. Break out of Scale 'Traps' and Creative Ruts while also building Guitar Technique As musicians, one of the biggest challenges we face is that our fingers are often in charge of our brain. Patterns or licks that we have memorised have a habit of coming out without us actually consciously meaning to play them. How many times have you thought, ‘Damn! I just played that same lick again!’? Fretboard fluency trains your ears and brain to be in charge of your fingers while also developing your internal 'dictionary' of creative, melodic approaches. The patterns, structures and approaches you will learn help you find new and creative ways to express yourself in guitar soloing. Get Creative while Mastering Sequences, Interval Skips, Triad and Arpeggio Patterns. Part One of Fretboard Fluency divides the Major Scale into useful melodic sequences and patterns of intervals, triads and arpeggios to achieve three distinct goals: Develop melodic vocabulary to allow you to access new musical ideas Become so confident with scale shapes that you are able to let your ears guide your solo Develop devastating, yet targeted guitar technique that enables you to play the lines that you hear in your head Dedicated Chapters on Incorporating New Ideas into your Existing Playing Fretboard Fluency is not just a dictionary of melodic patterns. It teaches you to actually get creative with unlimited musical possibilities. Fretboard Fluency Covers: Essential and useful melodic sequences, intervallic approaches, triads and Arpeggios The Modes of the Major, Melodic and Harmonic Minor scales The CAGED System - Easily memorise every scale in every key, anywhere on the neck How to get creative Every useful scale, anywhere on the guitar Over 110 notated audio examples 24 original backing tracks Fundamental Changes Are the Best Selling Guitar Books on desertcart! PERFECT! I have been playing guitar for several years ...
PERFECT!I have been playing guitar for several years and felt like I was getting stuck in musical ruts and needed some new ideas. This book opened the doors wide and I feel much happier with my playing styles thanks to the easy to follow lessons. It's a well written book and doesn't get you bogged down with nonsense ... like I said PERFECT!!

WELL THOUGHT OUT
This is a fantastic book. It is very clearly laid out and gently leads you, step by step, to getting familiar and fluent with the fretboard. It works on two levels; getting the info into your brain and into your muscle memory so that licks and runs start to come naturally without consciously planning them.I am a real fan of Joseph's books and would recommend this to anyone who is serious about learning guitar.

Good and detailed book.
A good and detailed book aimed at lifting fretboard skills above the average. I have had this book for about 2 weeks now and have barely scraped the surface but started to notice that my scales are become more natural and smooth - it really is going to take quite a while to progress through. No rush and no magic wand here - this book just shows the hard work and path to take to really get better.A couple of small negatives though:1. the layout could be better as it is very easy to get lost2. a ring bound version always sits better on a stand or desk.3. Perhaps some of the stuff that spans multiple pages could be on a pullout style page so that it can all be viewed at once?

Excellent learning tool for players of all levels.
Very well written and laid out, I have been playing guitar for many years and taught a number of close friends to play.If this book had been available all those years ago, I would have developed at a much faster rate, and would have help my teaching skills immensely. Joseph Alexander has definitely redefined the way guitar playing should be taught.Since purchasing this volume, I bought many others in the series and my playing skills and confidence on the instrument have grown ten fold. Thank you Joseph.

this is an excellent guide to the fretboard for the just-below intermediate stage ...
Clear, straightforward, challenging but not overcomplicated, this is an excellent guide to the fretboard for the just-below intermediate stage guitarist. The exercises swiftly become second nature with practice. Unlike some other guides, there is nothing overly daunting or offputting here. On the contary, this book is a constant encouragement to learn, practice, and improve. Strongly recommended.

Phenomenal book that has fundamentally changed my playing for the better
I have been playing guitar for over ten years and have my grade yet when playing lead I always struggled to use the neck to its fullest extent. This book within the first few days has already lead to a huge improvement in my playing. If you are having the same problems as me which I am lead to understand is a pretty common problem then I 100% fully recommend this boom. If I could give it 50 stars I would

... all have our own way of learning that works best for us
I think we all have our own way of learning that works best for us. When you are learning an instrument you might try a number of different methods/teachers to find one that suits. I've now settled on Joseph Alexander books because they seem to fit with my learning approach. He teaches the important things you need to know about the musical theory and then puts it right into practice. By this method there is no requirement to fully master an exercise before moving on - and this helps to keep things interesting and minimise the boredom. The only reason I've given 4 stars and not 5, is because in my printed edition, some of the diagrams look a bit "scratchy" - like they have been resized and the resolution hasn't worked out. But that's just a presentation problem, the material content is worth 5 stars.

which is fine but it's not obvious and obviously practicing one scale ...
Incredibly poorly set out book. All readers of this book will know that learning the contents is always going to be a challenge, so this requires the teaching and structure of the book to be as simple as possible. Every chapter has several week long plans, in some of his writing he appears to indicate that you must combine these week long plans by jumping about into different chapters out of order. At other times he indicates taking it slowly, which is fine but it's not obvious and obviously practicing one scale in one position for a week seems to contradict his introduction in the book.I think I was just expecting a more day to day structured book that helped your practice to be as efficient as possible so you could focus on the playing and learning and not be worrying about what I'm supposed to do and when.

Best Instructional Book for a Foundation in Playing lead guitar
I have been playing guitar since I was 15 (I'm 61 now), but I just played acoustic folk, finger style and strumming. At 55, my wife got me lessons with a local lead guitar player after I got the blues bug and I started my journey to re-learn my approach to playing the guitar. After several somewhat useful YouTube and subscription lessons on licks and techniques, I finally found two books by Joseph Alexander (Fretboard Fluency & CAGED System -100 Licks for Blues Guitar) that allows me to practice and establish a progressive approach to being able to play musically without being just a mechanical scale player. I have a long ways to go, but after one week I do feel different about how I approach and understand the fretboard in relation to making music. I really do believe that if I make it to the end of these exercises, I might be worth listening to because I will be able to express myself instead of just sound like somebody else. Thank you Joseph for putting these lessons together in a readable format. Tim T.
